Re: Slow Warm Engine Cranking/Start

With a new gear reduction starter, fuel pump (VW type), new fuel filter, noise suppressor removed (civilian ignition installed la year agi), generally upgraded ignition wiring, the Pinz has been starting and running great for the past month. Only gripe has been a bit of hesitation on pulling a hill ...

Re: Slow Warm Engine Cranking/Start - Problem Solved

Finally got the Pinz out from under the snow and installed one of EI's gear reduction starters.

That is an amazing piece of hardware - like night and day.

Engine starts right up every time.

Ready to rock 'n roll!! :D

Re: Coils, ballast resistor, and 4500 rpm module

Well, it apparently wasn't the ballast resistor (ouch!) Installed the new resistor and tried to start the engine - I got a very slow crank and a sputter, that's all. Having read some more posts, the voltage out of the ballast resistor with engine not running can be in the 10.5 neighborhood. Can anyo...

Re: Wiper motor cleanup

Now its too cold in the garage to do it so it will wait till spring, maybe. I have several projects waiting for warmth to get done. Some of those things you included links to appear to need boxes to protect them. Are you kidding? Wait for warmth? Here I am, trying to get my poor Pinz running so I c...

Re: Slow Warm Engine Cranking/Start

I jumped over to a different thread that was dealing with the ignition stuff:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6538

Some good info there.

Re: Coils, ballast resistor, and 4500 rpm module

Now that I've just popped for a $109.00 ballast resistor, I'm wondering what might have made it crash?

I would hate to install a new one only to have it crash also. :x

Anyone have any ideas or theories?

Thanks,

Ben

Re: Coils, ballast resistor, and 4500 rpm module

Ok - I think we're making progress. I get the same coil voltage (10.5) between the (+) terminal and ground regardless of which ground I use (chassis or engine) and regardless whether the (-) terminal is grounded (chassis or engine) or not. I checked the 4500 rpm module and got 25 volts to ground (re...

Re: Wiper motor cleanup

I took my motor apart and discovered two stripped gears. Sent the motor to Don the Wiper Guy and he fixed it, using gears from a Porsche motor. He did a one-hour bench test and also confirmed that the motor stops in the park position - very important, as previously noted. For that reason, I'm thinki...

Re: Coils, ballast resistor, and 4500 rpm module

Jim, Your discussion came in handy today as I was trying to figure out a sick engine issue. Only problem is that the coil voltage (+ to ground) with the 4500 rpm module connected was 10volts, and with the connector jumpered (middle to middle), it was 9.8 volts. The full details are posted in another...

Now serious sputtering and 10v coil voltage?

Since I started this thread, the ol' Pinz has purred like a kitten, except for slow hard warm engine start - until last Monday. Went to town and the weather was nasty - rain/snow/slush and lots of it. In the way out of town, the engine started to miss and sputter seriously. I limped into a gas stati...

Re: Body Caulk? And Rust & Body Repair

Shawn: Thanks for the advice. Your post led me on an internet quest - found plenty on seam sealer, even videos on how to use it. Better yet, I ended up at the VW forum - it has a thread that follows a five-year-old test of several commercial rust treatments. There is good info in that thread, but th...

Indicator Light Lenses

Does anyone know where I can get new lenses for the in-dash indicator lights - turn signal, E brake, brights, 4500 rpm, etc. Mine have holes burned in them, probably due to using wrong bulbs. SAV only has a blue lens. Can't find them on other supplier's sites. Since they are apparently just little p...

Body Caulk? And Rust & Body Repair

So what's with this (see photo)? It is a relatively soft rubbery substance that fills all the body joints on the tub of my Pinz. Is this OEM? It is loose in a lot of places and there is rust under it wherever it is loose. So, I'm thinking I gotta remove all of it and treat the rust. Then, should I b...
