Re: Changing piston, cylinders and cylinder heads

A shop with VW and Porche experience is ideal, your in good hands.

I'd be curious what he finds w.r.t. Valve seating. I do buy some
engine parts from S-Tec.

Re: Changing piston, cylinders and cylinder heads

There was more than one source for casting heads. There should be a casting mark on each head. See if they are identical. In any case, no matter how good the mating surfaces look, hand lap them. If they are pretty good to start with then it's a quick and more of a verification. Otherwise, the one wi...

Re: Changing piston, cylinders and cylinder heads

It's disappointing when you get something new and it's not perfect :o But, these aren't "New" they are "New Old Stock" cast some 50 years ago. They won't be perfect. They got moved and kicked around from one storage loc to another. Qualitatively, they look usable to me. A figure ...

Re: Changing piston, cylinders and cylinder heads

Most probably if the valves came installed they were seated.
It would be a very poor practice to just stick them in not grind
to the proper seating.

My last rebuild I acquired 4 new heads and they did not include
the Valves -- that's why I asked.

Re: Changing piston, cylinders and cylinder heads

Yup, and nicely honed at that.

Oh, curious, did the S-Tec heads come with the Valves seated and installed?

Re: Changing piston, cylinders and cylinder heads

The protective coating must be removed. Some have reported that soaking in Diesel fuel will dissolve the coating, followed by squirts of Brake clean. As far as honing the cylinders, if you look down the bore you should see cross-hatching marks which would indicate they were honed at the factory -- w...

Re: Hydraulic Lines

The locker light is pretty conclusive. If you want a more positive mechanical confirmation. For rear locker: Lift one rear tire off the ground. Put Tranie in neutral; ...with rear locker OFF lifted tire will spin freely ...with rear locker ON lifted tire is now locked to the rear tire on the ground....

Re: Hydraulic Lines

Slave cylinders have bleeders. But it's possible someone broke one off. They can be pretty frail at times. Attached is a PIX showing the loc of the bleeder -- compliments of Swiss Army Vehicles. If one is broken off, you could either pull the Slave and replace it, or pull it and attempt to extract t...

Re: Starter sometimes fails to engage

The spacing between my gear reduction starter to the chassis sidewall is close but there's a wee bit of clearance. WRT to the mounting, there are 4 bolts that hold the Starter Rubber mount and 2 that retain the "Nut plate". My suggestion is to remove all these components, clean, and inspec...

Re: Starter sometimes fails to engage

Here's what mine looks like. Almost looks like your motor and
intermediate housing is "clocked" out of position by 60 degrees?

Re: Starter sometimes fails to engage

BTW I did replace my Starter in the 710 with the gear reduction version from EI. Definitely a step up in starters. The old starter was rebuilt locally as a spare. They were able to source the parts necessary to rebuild it. A bit of a messy shop but they know what they are doing. San Jose Generator &...

Re: Starter sometimes fails to enage

Hmmm, Spins but no engagement, might be just a fair amount of wear on the fork lever so there's enough slop in the system that the motor contacts engage but there's not enough travel to the ring gear. Might need a rebuild on your starter. I am assuming your ring gear is OK as you probably inspected ...

Re: What clutch to buy

On both my trucks, I had a need for a tranie rebuild. So while in there I replaced the clutch and pressure plate with a EI kit. I believe they are BMW 5-series but don't know what year/generation. IMHO go for the kit. BTW check and make sure you have no signs of oil leaks around the cam timing housi...

Re: Changing piston rings

The VW video is the correct approach. And NO, do not use sealant on the Head to Cylinder. None needed when lapped properly. If you have cylinders already fitted with pistons, clamp the head in a vise and rotate the cylinder (upside down) to avoid getting debris inside the cylinder. If the cylinders ...
