Re: CA Residents - CARB Rules Have Changed Again.....

BTW, for anyone that's wondering about California's specifics for Direct Imports, aka Gray Imports, here's the relevant info I've found. Long post, not for the faint of heart. Extremely useful info for some folks in here, nonetheless. I live in Downtown Los Angeles, and can positively tell everyone ...

Re: CA Residents - CARB Rules Have Changed Again.....

In CA, the laws that apply to a "USED DIRECT IMPORT VEHICLE" are different than the laws that apply to the local Chevy, Ford, or Mercedes that were originally certified and sold in the US/CA. Direct Imports are governed by laws buried in the Health and Safety Code in CA. Thanks for the cl...

Re: CA Residents - CARB Rules Have Changed Again.....

AB220 has been drafted, exempting vehicles pre-1983 from SMOG testing requirements. Anyone have a learned opinion on if it might affect Pinzgauer licensing in the state, keeping in mind the up-thread discussion on how a Pinz is different than a Ford/Chevy? Video about the bill here: https://www.you...

Re: CA Residents - CARB Rules Have Changed Again.....

Do we have any idea why California decided a 71-72 year Pinz is acceptable, but anything after that is not? Officially California doesn't have any emissions or safety equipment restrictions on any automobile 1975 or earlier, so why do they even care at all? Scott's original 2015 blog post states tha...

Re: who Does Complete Restorations on 710M?

Sorry... EI is amazing and we’d be screwed without them but your quote of $200k for a nuts and bolt restore is ludicrous and I don’t think fair to Scott. That quote came directly from Scott three or four years ago, when I was mulling over the possibility of having EI perform a restomod on a 710. Be...

Re: who Does Complete Restorations on 710M?

Expedition Imports in San Francisco is my personal favorite. 200K USD will get you a nut-and-bolt restoration that's arguably even better than the factory restorations. For more than 200K you can specify just about any wild mods you like as long as you're keeping the air cooled petrol engine. If you...

Air Cooled V8 Pinzgauer

How wide and tall is the engine bay of the Pinz 710/712? Or I suppose the question could also be: how wide and tall is the Pinz air cooled four cylinder? Here's an interesting (wacky) idea for an engine swap: the air cooled 2.5 liter V8 from a Tatra 603. Its total outside width is 27.5 inches, total...

Re: Would You Purchase A Brand New Air Cooled Pinz?

So, taking all of the above into account, if there were a neanderthal-simple, air cooled Pinzgauer-type truck with a mechanically injected, direct injection diesel (not necessarily even turbo'd) that could attain and sustain say, um, at least 60-65mph on the highway... ...then that would be a truck ...

Re: Would You Purchase A Brand New Air Cooled Pinz?

Hmmm, okay then. For the sake of hypothesis only, let's say these were original air cooled Pinzies; but offered with all the upgrades aforementioned: disc brakes, power steering, blueprinted 2.7 engine, safety glass, etc, etc, and the factory had stocks of each and every part needed for maintenance ...

Re: Would You Purchase A Brand New Air Cooled Pinz?

Why ask, are you about to invest millions in a Pinz reman business? No, although I can't pretend the idea hasn't crossed my mind several times in the past... These days there seems to me an ever-widening chasm between folks that like ancient DIY-friendly auto and moto technology, you know, s...

Would You Purchase A Brand New Air Cooled Pinz?

If you could purchase a brand new Pinzgauer 710m or 712m, meaning brand-new-out-of-the-factory , not refurbished or restored, would you do it? Let's say each truck still had dual carbies, but was upgraded with a blueprinted 2.7 liter engine, six speed transmission, power disc brakes and an electroni...

Re: Canvas Door Tops

As far as I know those soft half doors are relatively rare factory options. Two or three years ago Scott at Expedition Imports brought some into the USA with a huge shipment of imported Pinzies and Pinzy parts. Might still have some available, or if not, probably has some contacts in Europe that can...

Thanks, David. This is exactly the specific piece of information that I was looking for.

Re: Can You Hand Crank A Pinz Gasoline Engine?

My question is... why? It's not likely that the starter will fail and if it does, you can just roll start the truck easily. Sometimes the terrain is not conducive to such a maneuver. And although the idea of somehow modding a Pinz to be hand crankable may seem redundant or even utterly unnecessary,...
