Re: Clutch failure survey

I don't mean to discount your survey but this is ultimately about an operating error. There's just no reason any 4x4 would need to rev up like that, engine or clutch, unless a driving error was made. Mistakes happen... I once rolled a 712 over several times, so I know! There's also no way to know ho...

Re: Clutch failure survey

What was in the video was very tame compared to what I've done countless times in all kinds of 4x4's so I didn't see anything that could likely cause a mechanical issue. It seems like you were in a higher gear than 1st low range or the engine braking would have slowed you down more, unless you relea...

Re: Clutch failure survey

What do you mean by "overspeed"? I had an almost new clutch fail once because the friction material cracked in one spot. The symptom confused everyone, which was it suddenly catching with no ease-in on take off. It was always assumed it was hydraulic and I went nuts bleeding and rebuilding that syst...

Re: Lots of cheap heaters popping up

Thanks for the report Simon. I wanted to add that I just tested my 2K model in actual conditions for the first time last weekend. I was camped out in Big Bear Ca. (elevation 6800 feet) and Sunday night there was wind with falling temps. It got down to 36 so I fired it up and within 5 minutes it was ...

Re: Clutch failure on trail. Need help.

My guess is a worn disc as well. Pulling the tranny is very easy and can be done anywhere with basic tools so don't sweat going after it.

Wow that's unreal, but I doubt it will stay hidden long. I'll keep a look out here north of the city.

They need to pay for doing that...

Re: Careful with that Chinese junk! Failed jack-stand

Yeah makes you want to examine your critical tools. I use some fairly cheap ones but they are rated way past normal and are massive. Last week I saw a Smittybilt awning, which I didn't know they made. It looks kinda like my ARB awning which is somewhat aged now but it still looks way better than the...

Careful with that Chinese junk! Failed jack-stand

Saw this news story about Harbor Freight jack stands failing while using it on a VW car. Should that be a surprise? They have a recall notice out. "Pittsburgh" is about as Chinese as it gets. Gotta love the marketing companies with these good old American brand name ideas. Smittybuilt is another pop...

Rotopax is making a traction board, RotoTrax

I havent seen these in person yet but the $99 price is really good right now if they are even half as good as the Australian made Maxtrax or Tred-Pro's. I carry the Tred-Pro's which I can't recommend enough to people. In fact I'd go so far as to say they are more useful than a winch for lots of reco...

Re: New off-road GPS coming

I've seen mixed reviews so far on this thing. I have to endorse the Montana 680t even more because lately I've been using it a lot and was reminded. The fact that I can take it off the charger/mount in one second and take it hiking is a big deal. I added detailed street maps with a memory card in on...

New High-Lift tree strap - highly recommended

It was time for a new and better tree strap. There are limited choices of brands of straps that I believe can be trusted. I've personally only used US Cargo Control, ARB or Bubba Rope. Most others are made in China which isn't something I will go for. These are either Australian (who make some of th...

Re: Pinz Fluid summary

Many modern GL5 oils, especially synthetics, are made so they don't affect the brass in GL4 spec'ed trans. Redline GL5 is one such oil that is safe for all gear systems.
