It certainly was! Then again the original isn't exactly a Ferrari is it?

Re: How strong is the drive line? 1987 718 P90

I have some notes somewhere that I'd have to refer to be confident but the P93/5 cylinder diesels were approaching the limit of what was possible with the existing Pinz drivetrain. Hence the very significant changes being considered for Pinz 2 which had 400Nm+ torque/150kW in 6 cylinder form. Off th...

Re: Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement

Well I checked out our supply chain today but there wouldn't be any cost savings buying from us at present. Looks like something with cost-down potential though so I'll put it on the "to-look-at" list!

Re: Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement

Gunipinzmutt - can you send me the part numbers you're interested in and I'll check them on my system? I naively thought that door seals weren't a major problem to source but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm proved wrong....

Re: Intercooler

Yes, it was hack together using parts we had left over from another project. We used a small electric fan/radiator normally used as a hydraulic oil cooler which seemed to work fine for our initial investigations. We mounted the charge cooler right below the turbo on the front body support bracket so...

Re: Air shock absorbers

David, Fair enough - obviously I'm only familiar with P93/5 cylinder models and everything we worked with at Guildford had the air pressure/brake link, which made re-specifying the air spring when the original design went obsolete a bit more complex than it would have otherwise been. On the plus sid...

Re: Air shock absorbers

The air springs are supplied by ZF Sachs and are unique to the Pinzgauer so not cheap and not easily rebuilt. The ZF part number should be etched on the damper body. If you're thinking to replace them with standard dampers instead just remember that on the 716 the air pressure is linked to rear brak...

Re: Intercooler

While not a sanctioned production improvement, we did look at air to water charge cooling for the 5 cylinder Pinzgauer at Guildford. This was primarily to reduce the backpressure caused by the existing air to air cooler which has a fairly tortuous routing and for boring engineering reasons like redu...

Re: 718 Sales Documentation - Rollover Protection?

Scott I've checked one of the relevant Steyr drawings (716.1.75.060.2) and it's entitled "Ueberrollbogen" which translates as "roll over arch" so it's clear that the original design intent was to provide roll over protection. However the drawings were produced in the days before ...

Re: 718 Sales Documentation - Rollover Protection?

Scott, Can you clarify what evidence you're looking for and why you need it? I might be able to help you out - the front and rear hoops are designed to provide a degree of protection in the event of a rollover but I don't think Steyr or ATL ever went as far as officially calling them a rollover prot...

Re: broken air suspension, outback australia.....HELP!!!!

A few more notes on rear suspension: 1. UK MOD spec rear springs were only uprated so that in the event of a punctured airbag the suspension wasn't on the bumpstops at full load. 2. The rear spring + airbag combination is fine up to the plated limit for the rear axle. The compressor only has to work...

Re: broken air suspension, outback australia.....HELP!!!!

UK MOD-spec 4x4s have changes to the air suspension due to problems found with stone fragments puncturing air springs during the original acceptance trials. AFAIK the changes were: 1. Higher rate rear coil spring - think the new springs had green/gold markings, part number will start 758 2. Differen...

Re: broken air suspension, outback australia.....HELP!!!!

The Viair unit is current spec and is what you'd get from Stech if you bought a replacement as the Wabco unit isn't available anymore. If you have the circuit diagram it shouldn't be hard to fab a bracket to hold a replacement compressor and rewire it correctly. Note the Viair unit needs an uprated ...

Re: How much does your TD smoke?

In my experience all well looked after P80s/P90s/P93s generally smoke a bit on start up, visibly clear(ish) once warm except when you boot it. Similar to any other mechanical injection diesel of the era really...

Will post a fuller post later, but the 5cyl Pinz box is basically HP24 internals in the 22 casing. Later production boxes even use the Rover gear ratios as ZF moved production to a smaller facility and standardised on a single ratio for all the remaining customers which happened to be the Rover rati...
