Re: Popping/backfiring on deceleration - need a rebuild?

I've had this popping on desceleration for a long time... also I've had the stumble/stalling on initial acceleration (low rpm). I wonder if they are related. Can it be a valves issue?

Re: pinging / knockin

Done it. No leaks. I had a year ago discovered the hose between the plenums had melted... fixed that and sprayed starter fluid everywhere. No leaks.
I don't think I am running lean.

Re: pinging / knockin

What would make the engine run lean with everything stock? (I assume the carbs are stock).
Thanks for the answer, Clive.

pinging / knockin

Can please someone try to describe pinging / knocking? I can hear like popcorn exploding inside the engine under load, is that it? Or is it more metallic? Is it similar to valves clicking? Thanks!

Re: too much centrifugal advance?

Jim, if I could afford the SSI, I would do it. Just too expensive. I know I can waterproof the civi ignition, just need to figure out why it is not working ok with the original distributor. I have a friend with a Pinz, I will swap dizzies one of these days. Based on what I experience, the problem wo...

too much centrifugal advance?

I am timing the pinz and the only way to get good power below 1800 rpm is to advance it to the point where at high rpms I get pre-ignition.... as if the advance was either not opening soon enough, or advancing too much... I took the distributor apart and everything is clean and smooth in the interio...

Re: UnimogSSI is now available

I would LOVE to have one for my Pinz. Just cant justify $700 when the truck is $12000. I'll be here waiting for price to go down or until I get a promo code!

Re: Pulley w degrees

I have been having a very hard time timing my engine. The pulley has a mark on the outer rim that I always thought was the mark to align with the block pointer. After enough frustration, I decided to explore the outer limits and found that the engine runs quite well with the mark delayed about 40mm ...

Re: Carburetor Pump pressure valve and Pump vacuum valve...

Found the obvious problem. I took the carbs out and found that instead of the pump suction valve, I had installed the starter jet in its place. (parts 01-40-36 instead of 01-49-51.)
They have same thread and will interchange.. but with the most undesirable results.
For the records.

Carburetor Pump pressure valve and Pump vacuum valve...

My forward carb pump is not injecting fuel as my back carb. I changed both pumps but I am starting to believe I have either clogged jets or the pump valves are bad. (Parts 1-40-49 and 1-40-51)
Anyone with experience on such a problem?

Thanks,
Jerome

Re: Slow signal light flasher

My problem with the dash lights resided in burnt connectors on the diode/resistance unit under the dash. Not sure what the name of the unit is. on the schematic it has a 65 and 66.

- back to the carbs Im assuming you have been using Jim L's excellent write ups on the carbs. http://www.goatwerks.com/carb.htm and http://www.goatwerks.com/carbarticle.htm Yes I have... and found that the front carb is probably the culprit... the acceleration pump puts about half of the flow the b...

Re: Timing - running better - still backfires

Yes, they do. To check them you turn the key to the on position. Then unplug the electrical connection from each valve and then tap it back against to terminal. You should hear a clear click as the solenoid clicks open. No click, then the solenoid is probably stuck closed and is cutting off fuel to...

Re: Timing - running better - still backfires

Running significantly better, I think I have played enough with the timing to get it to where I need to move on to the carbs issues before coming back to timing issues. The engine now idles quite well but still hesitates stalls on initial acceleration. I started looking at the carbs again after disc...
