Re: Battery going dead

The Alt light could appear to be working normally as long as your Battery is at least 18V AND the DF output from the Alternator is good AND there is a good connection to the regulator. Though if you look at the bulb you may see it very dimly lit. What lights the Alt lamp up is the difference in volt...

Re: New GMRS antennas for 4x4s from Midland

Funny I was getting the opposite impression with how GMRS is being marketed so much lately to the "overland" and group trail crowds. Indeed, the Overland community is moving to GRMS, there's a fee for a license but no test. And there are a growing number of repeaters on mountain tops that...

Re: New GMRS antennas for 4x4s from Midland

GMRS is just over 462 MhZ. A wavelength of about 67 CM. All you really need w.r.t. a ground plane is 1/4 wavelegnth so your down to less than a foot for a decent "ground/radial". So if you ground near a bumper it's going to be good. By way of example, CB is 27MhZ, 11M wavelength, now your ...

Re: Steering box

There are several places Oil cab leak out of the steering gear box, where's it leaking? I had to pull mine last year and put in new seals and re-seal the shim plate. It's a bit of a PITA. So...if leaking underneath by the Pitman arm could be the bottom seal or an O-ring. That's a relatively quick fi...

Re: starter

Paul is spot on! I have the EI gear reduction starter in my 710 and a stock Bosch big boy in the 712 -- big difference between starts. BTW don't toss your old one, get it rebuilt. Getting rare and who knows how long EI will be souring the reduction starter. The only thing I toss these days is used o...

Re: Towing

My Arborist just swing my and uses a Ball-Pintle combo hitch. Kinda cool, don't know if there would be any interference with the bottom of the door, but I found several options on etrailer. Don't know about shipping outside the US either but knowing something exists then the hunt begins  https...

Re: Timing Question...

You want to minimize parallex by viewing the pointer to mark right through the center of the pulley.
The most convenient place to do that is on the passenger side and gives ready access to the distributor
to rotate.

Are you running any aftermarket Solid-state-ignition or stock setup?

Re: Daily driver tire wear

With the Pinz suspension, Toe-in effects Camber.
So indirectly you can adjust the Camber via a Toe-in adjustment.

Re: Bad Diode? Charging indicator light on when vehicle is off

Yes, that drawing is showing the B+ diode and it's mounting/cooling plate #1. The assembly from SAV would save you the effort of pressing out the old and figuring out which ones are bad -- but, the leads of the B+ (and B-) Diodes are soldered to the Exciter circuit board, which also connects to stat...

Re: Bad Diode? Charging indicator light on when vehicle is off

Well this result points to a shorted Diode. Note that D+ is about one diode drop below B+ (Battery) -- that makes sense. There are 3 "Exciter" diodes, fancy name for the Alternator output that drives the rotor field winding via the regulator. These diodes are not your problem. There are tw...

Re: Bad Diode? Charging indicator light on when vehicle is off

How to test that relay -- there's a simple test. Ordinarily, with the engine running, D+ is outputting 24V, which is connected to the Regulator AND the bypass relay -- thus the relay closes in parallel with the bypass switch. When the IGN switch is then turned off, the relay should remain closed as ...

Re: Bad Diode? Charging indicator light on when vehicle is off

When you turn off the Battery switch does the Switch bypass relay stay ON (#53 in the schematic) or does the dimly lit Alternator light turn off? You could also try getting a voltmeter on the D+ terminal (Blue wire) as well as pin #61 on the regulator. If one of (3) forward high current bridge diode...
