I tried a ball joint separator, a bearing puller but with no success. I eventually bought a pitman arm puller which worked a treat.
Check the size before you buy (this one may not suit).

So I'm off looking for a V8 gearbox now to pinch the back end from - good tip! Have you thought of moving the handbrake to the rear axles? I wonder if it is possible to replicate the rear disc onto the back of the Axle PTO? Might save you having to move the cross member, and as you cut the handbrake...
