Re: DREAMMING ON OVERDRIVE

Good pointers Dan! Bikmakr's OD design uses CV joints. And to my prior message he has the extra torque with the 2.7L EFI upgrade (not to mention his own pretty spectacular intake manifold of his own design). The key points are this is a tricky mod given the very tight space between the X-case and Tr...

Re: DREAMMING ON OVERDRIVE

A few of use have the TD Tranie which is OD in 5'th. I can tell you from 1'st hand experience if you don't have the 2.7L EFI providing somewhat over 20% additional Torque you will find yourself constantly hunting gears or more often than not just finding OD won't cut it unless the wind is to your ba...

Re: Basic Stock Brake Performance Question

I regularly go down long steep grades in my 710K from Bay Area to Barstow, Mojave, and DV etc.
Never had a problem. I try to stay ~50MPH on steep downgrades -- Fear factor. I have the
TD Tranie and on down grades typically 4'th gear severs me well controlling speed, needing the
brakes is secondary.

Re: Rak 15 wiring help

Well that rear plug sure looks like a factory installed outlet -- havn't seen one of these before good to know. From the schematics which calls out several different variations it seems there is a fuse in-line on these Aux. plugs. The plugs intended for the (radio) Transmitters typically have a brea...

Re: Rak 15 wiring help

Never saw a 2-pole plug on the tail section before, wonder if that was a add-on. There's a few variants of acc plugs for the K I have seen, 1 plug and a 2 plug version behind the passengers seat both with Breakers. Also schematics do show other variants with 2-pole and fused, also a dome light fused...

Re: Flushing Hydraulics

Vince is correct, never use anything other than the recommend DOT 3 brake fluid to flush the system.
One recommendation since you do plan on a complete flush, pump all the old fluid out first, then add
the new fluid that way you know all the old is indeed out.

Re: Cold Weather EFI Issues

Choke control and Cold crank increase the amount of fuel over the Map settings vs. temp. Have you played with these yet? I believe you can tweak these up starting at -20C and they both go to 0% at 60C with a linear interpolation between. I run with a SDS controller myself, it's similar in the cold s...

Re: Off-roading Performance -- a comparative technique

I have intended to respond to Jim's point that airing down does not significantly reduce a Tires effective radius. Just got some time today to make some measurements, the results are surprising -- to me at least  Initial tire pressure 50 lbs, measured tire radius center of hub to ground 15 5/8...

Re: Piston swap question

No special ring compressor, Just use plenty of lub or Vaseline.
Gonna get pretty wet starting early in the morning. Good luck
and don't hesitate to PM me if you have any assembly questions.

Re: Locker Switch Operation.

And while your at it, put an ohm meter on the switch terminal to ground
with the locker on -- should be a very low reading.

Re: Loctite

Repair manual calls for #270 green. This is high strength. However, I have been advised to use Loctite -- Bearing retainer e.g. #609, from someone who has done MANY of these repairs. A link for you here: http://www.loctite.com.au/3320_AUE_HTML.htm?nodeid=8802648195073 Where it is applied is on the m...

Re: Piston swap question

Yes, you can tear down the top end and rebuild in place, for any one or all of the cylinders needing an overhaul. Tricks, yes. First recommend while #4 is out, replace the push rod and oil return tube gaskets and O-rings. Note that the washers on the push rod tubes are special and have a very subtle...

Re: Ticking in front cylinder

Yup, crank the engine with the starter. Just 2 or 3 rev's for a peak reading. Again this won't be definitive but might lead to a clue. Oh, and I never tried this before, but you could put a mirror on the endoscope head and look back at the valves, when open a peak at the valve seats -- just for yuks...

Re: Ticking in front cylinder

Worth trying a compression test, any significant difference between #1 and the other jugs might
imply a ring problem. Also get an endoscope down the bore and inspect the cylinder walls.
Other than that your kind'a left with exploratory surgery or monitoring the situation to see if it
progresses.

Re: Clutch issue

The flywheel bolts are designed to stretch under load to establish an accurate pre-load condition. The low'ish initial toque is to take all the "slop" out of the interfaces only. Applying a torque with a Torque wrench has a fair amount of inaccuracies due to thread and surface friction, th...
