Re: Shudder when shifting

If you decide to change a clutch, check Jim's site. It lists a PN for a heavier-duty BMW clutch that is better for the 2.7L.

Re: Seattle Area Pinz Mechanic?

Just to add to what other folks have said, I strongly encourage your to take the drive. It's a big learning experience! My only advice is to make sure you check oil after every fillup. When I make long hauls and the oil is allowed to get hot, it likes to turn to vapor and seep down valve stems. So w...

Re: fan pulley came apart at speed on the highway

The NAPA belt I am using now has worked great. Though when I first started it, it flung off a bunch of material that I guess is from manufacturing. It now runs great, I've had a few 1+ hour highway trips with it. Though the PN on Jim's site is for a 'lawn' belt, I was told by NAPA it's better than t...

I'm incredibly envious! What's the exact model of your winch?

Re: fan pulley came apart at speed on the highway

I don't mean to knock anyone, but I've had really bad luck with any parts from SAV that are subject to problems due to aging. Gaskets, hoses, etc. I've had reorder from EI. I did recently change my belt with the NAPA equivalent listed on Jim's website. It works exactly as it should and was somethin...

Re: AVGAS, as a lead additive.?????

Great info, that's the input I was looking for from Jim. If a valve seat was soft the the point of premature failure, an additive would do little to prolong life I would think.

Re: Diesel Mercedes Gurus!

Regarding the last post: They aren't 460 models. The newer mil G's that can not be imported here (and are seldom for sale anywhere) are much newer 461's. What did you mean by "the 5-speed"? Are you talking about a conversion on a certain truck you are looking to buy? It may be a newer mod...

Re: AVGAS, as a lead additive.?????

Well, comparing to my TW, the head design is the same with seats cut directly in to the head. There are no actual 'seats' like in an aluminum head motor. And those engines run a higher RPM for a VERY long time. That being said, I'm sure that running a lead additive doesn't harm anything. I just don'...

Re: AVGAS, as a lead additive.?????

Wait. Is this stuff even needed?? I just use regular with gas with some ethanol defenses. Even my old air cooled bikes I never worried about lead additives.

Re: Diesel Mercedes Gurus!

Based on the info I was able to find, the 5 speed is an overdriven 5th. Not terribly overdriven though. .085x. And still sport the same axle ratio. If I find the link again, I will post back here. Man I want a G wagen badly. But I will only settle for a diesel... or maybe an AMG...

Re: Diesel Mercedes Gurus!

Dang. Honestly, that was the answer I was expecting... I just love the idea of a Jeep-sized 4 door with a diesel engine. Looked like the Merc was the best offer. Plus the military background and Puch affiliation made me geeky for it. Any civ versions with diesel?

Diesel Mercedes Gurus!

So I'm looking to replace my slowly dying GMC Sonoma sometime in the future and I keep coming back to the 300GD as a DD. I know that military 300GDs only come with a 4spd, but a few folks online talk about having a 12v, 5spd, A/C 300GD... What's the story on those?! Where do they come from??!! I'm s...

Re: Austrian spec shift linkage

I'd be happy to provide pictures of what's on mine if needed, but my shifter is still pretty vague. When in gear, you can still move the shifter about 1.5" in any direction. It took a lot of practice to be able to pin a gear without fault. My neighbor who has an austrian model recently adjusted...

Re: Bottle jack options?

Great info everyone! PM replied. Looks like I was able to secure a OEM jack :D

Seeing as the tire iron is the normal 4-size, I will just grab one from HF or something. I know where mine was mounted, so I should finally be able to be comfortable driving anywher now haha
