got it ... thanks Mike. I can take it from there.

tho I am a bit surprised the ballast resistor is adjustable ... I've never heard of that sort of thing before. all the ones I'm familiar with are a fixed resistor. guess I'll have to look at that resistor closer

the coil

turned out to be the coil. I had a spare laying around that I subbed in and it fired right up. odd. the coil that was in there was pretty new... two or three months old.

anyways, it's running now.

I'd still like to see some kind of wiring diagram for hooking up the points ...

no start-ee

so, I went out side to go to work this morning and ... no start. cranks fine, but no start. luckily, I have a back up vehicle, a motorcycle, but it's supposed to rain this weekend. i get home tonight and take a look at my pinz and it appears as tho I'm not getting any spark. 24 volts to the coil,goo...

"slow" lube leak drivers side front wheel

so I've got this leak ... i don't think it's coming from the drain plug, it appears to be coming from the seam between the brake plate and the wheel drive housing (group 4.01/page 30 parts #5 & 10 in the factory spare parts catalog) a picture ... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3435/3710474250_9e...

my understanding on it was, that "BU"(Before Unleaded) the addition of lead in the gas was to provide lubrication to the valve faces/seats(among other things). if you run no-lead gas without the lead additive, you'll get premature wear on the valve faces and/or valve seats. the permanent f...

i thought so, too.

I'm-a run it for a while and then check the plugs to see if they look ok or not.

hot start issues appear to be solved

put a new coil on ... actually, not just the coil. sprang for the civi conversion ... and it passed the first test. run to temp, turn it off and restart after approx 20 minutes. starts just fine now, just like it should. the old military plugs came out pretty black, tho. I think it's still running r...

I contemplated doing exactly this but was afraid of cutting up the military wires. I'll do it this weekend.

and thanks again.

I suspect this'll fix my troubles.

Re: not exactly ...

- Check spark from the coil to the distributor - Check spark on a plug - Ohm the coil, also check voltage at the coil these were next on my list of "to do"s - Check the carb throats for accel pump squirt.... if you are getting a real heat soak it can evaporate the fuel from the bowl, etc ...

not exactly ...

the coil appears to be cool to the touch when i turn it off. the ballast resister is on the warm-close-to-hot side, but still "cool" enough to touch and hold without burning my hand. it'll restart immediately-after-it's-hot with no trouble at all. after about 20 minutes of sitting and cool...
