Re: LUAZ 969m Volin

Those look like a great little rig - has a air cooled 4 cylinder engine in the front and portal axles. Sort of a backwards haflinger. Price is crazy though but the condition looks good.

Re: Piston swap question

I've done it. Can't think of any tricks required. Be sure to get exhaust studs as they usually butlst off.

Re: Front half axles

If they are standing up on the wheel studs then turning the splined end of the axle shouldn't allow rotation since the wheel studs are in contact with the ground.

Do you still have the brake drums on? One could be binding?

Re: Sherp Amphibious ATV

Wonder if one of these could cross the Darien Gap unaided - might have enough fuel capability with 75 gallons - good for about 100 hours of operation.

Interesting that they don't seem of include any recovery attachment points - perhaps because they don't get stuck?

Sherp Amphibious ATV

There was a posting of two of the "SHERP" vehicles on a flatbed trailer at a Walmart in Idaho - they were labeled with "www.sherp.ca" - apparently they are starting to be offered here in North America. Very impressive vehicle - although also extremely capable of causing environme...

Re: 1972 Search & Rescue Pinz (*warning* picture heavy)

The front end was lifted up by about 1 inch using an "off-the-shelf" rigid metallic conduit threaded coupling - 1.5" trade size - available from any electrical supply store. Don't confuse it with the regular "EMT" metal conduit which is much thinner and doesn't use threads -...

Re: 1972 Search & Rescue Pinz (*warning* picture heavy)

There was also a 1.5 inch spacer lift added to the front end when the new tires were installed - so that might make the tires look a bit smaller. I agree that these are a better fit - not as many narrow tires for 17 inch wheels and then these Trail Ready beadlocks are 8.5" wide too. I'll do a w...

Re: unique 4wd driveline I'd never heard of-interesting arti

Yep - I saw one of these in Colorado once - very interesting idea but they are subject to "wind-up" when driven on hard surfaces due to the lack of differentials between the front and rear wheel on each side. The spare tire working as an assistive device for getting over obstacles is a int...

Look similar to the H-drive system used on DAF military trucks: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-drive https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9e/H_drive_train_DAF_YA_126.png/1382px-H_drive_train_DAF_YA_126.png https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e8/DAF_YA_126_at_H...
