Re: Why did my Pinz have fuel delivery issues

The only problem I ever had with the EFI conversion was the external fuel pump; either getting vapor lock (at 107F desert temperature) at anything below 3/4 tank, or (after fixing that issue by draining off the bottom of the tank from the drain fitting, and putting the pump at that level) getting ai...

Re: Please can someone explain Idle vs Main Fuel Jets?

First, the engine does not run well at 7 deg advance, it does much better at about 12 or 14. Don't worry about it, mine runs best with a much higher advance, too. Remember that the spec engine is in military trim to make it the most bulletproof in all conditions with all fuels, 50 years ago, and no...

Re: Please can someone explain Idle vs Main Fuel Jets?

In most carbs, the "idle" ports are around the side of the bore just below the throttle plates; engine vacuum helps to pull fuel through them. The "Main" fuel ports on the other hand are above the throttle plates in the low vacuum portion of the carb venturi. Both of these contro...

Re: Electronic speedometer sender

I re-used the VDO sender when I replaced their gauge with a Speedhut unit. I did have to add a "pull up" resistor as shown in the installation instructions.

Re: Off-roading Performance -- a comparative technique

Nice work. Just a thought: airing down does not really change the tire radius - you still have the same circumference of tread to go around each revolution (this is why tire speed is no longer allowed as a method of determining under pressure in tires - the rotational speed is almost exactly the sam...

Re: Battery not charging -electrical doctor please

I've never worked on or seen the wiring for a 718, but there are some things you can check: 1. The heavy, red wire at the alternator should go directly to the battery (or mostly directly). The alternator has diodes built in to do the rectification from AC to DC. If the heavy, red wire terminal on th...

Re: Front brake problems.

The drum may have been worn by the old shoes not quite as wide as the the drum is; there may be a "lip" on the inside of the drum wear surface. So it turns fine until you squeeze the drum on the last millimeter where the shoes hit the lip. You could try turning the adjuster in enough to al...

Re: pinzguar712

Jim L. recently did a compression check, getting in the 130-140 psi range across all four cylinders. So I guess that would be in the ~9:1 compression ratio (130/140 divided by 14.7). But I didn't think Jim upped the compression much; checking, I find that the stock engine was 7.5:1. Again, I'm not s...

Re: pinzguar712

I had 1,5 mm removed from the cylinder head bottom surface when I decided to redo the heads. ... Did you have to alter the pushrods to compensate for the shorter distance also? I would think that 1.5mm difference could be accommodated by the rocker adjusters. From what I think I remember that I hea...

Re: Fuel gauge not working

While both the sending unit, wiring, and gauge all go bad, in my experience it seems like the gauges fail more often than the sender or wiring. Replacing the gauge was the first "repair" I ever had to do on my Pinz.

Re: John Deere Hitch Receiver

Interesting - I don't think I have ever seen a 5 bolt version before!
My '76 712W has the 5 bolt pattern. IIRC, the new holes are actually threaded for bolts (which I used when I made my hitch).
