Rear Diff. Oil leaks

Last summer I had my hand brake bind up on the disc, get really hot from friction, and literally start smoking. I put a new disc in and overhauled the brake mechanism. Now I have noticed that my rear differential is leaking into both axle boots and also into the hand brake housing. Seems like the ov...

Re: a technique question.......

In my experience, Pinzgauers don't do well when pushed. Low range and locked axles always seems to produce better results for me.
But then again, I'm not fording mud pits that much. In Colorado, we have lots of rocks and not much mud.

Re: Theft-proofing a 710 ???

Things that will prevent your Pinz from getting stolen: - Park it in a garage or block it in with something while it's parked outside or in your driveway. - Remove the battery key AND disconnect the battery terminal. Then lock the battery box. - Place the transfer case in neutral. - Don't live in a ...

My two truck's pertronix ignitions are both 11 years old.
I've gone through about three ignition coils each in that time though.

Carbon fouling my carbs?

When I was swapping my main jets last summer, I noticed that the internals of my carbs were dark and sooty. I'm pretty sure that a carb in good condition should be clean and shiny since it should only deal with air and fuel.
Is this a symptom of bad piston rings?

Re: How High Have You Driven Your Pinz?

All you Colorado lads, have you experienced a lot of vapor lock in summer heat at Rocky Mtn elevations? And how much better is Jim's 2.7 big bore engine w/ torque cam at elevation than the standard 2.5? Vapor lock? Yes. The problem was solved (mitigated) by wrapping ALL of the fuel lines with insul...

Re: How High Have You Driven Your Pinz?

My two 1974 710M tour trucks live in Telluride-8750 ft. and go up to 13,220 ft. (Red Mtn overlook above Imogene Pass, CO.) every single day throughout the entire summer. Often times, they each do it twice daily.
We just passed our 11th season with the same trucks.

Re: Limiting Straps

OEM limit straps SUCK! And are very expensive.
I use the nylon (OK Offroad) ones. Two per wheel for redundancy. That way if one blows, you don't have to turn around and go home immediately.
After a bunch of use, I've learned to go with the 18" length rather than the 17.5"

Re: Running rich. How to "lean out?"

Thanks everyone. It seems that the 125 jets helped my trucks run better/smoother, but didn't solve my fouling-after-descents problem. Scott, I think you're right. I realize that my case is really rare... running at super high elevations with long/steep descents (4,600 feet in only 8 miles). I've alr...

Re: Running rich. How to "lean out?"

Could it be oil fouling instead? Oil could be getting past the rings and/or valve guides in a high RPM/throttle closed situation. Oil is getting sucked in while the plugs are running cooler temporarily, this fouls the plugs. Pinzgauer engines run much cooler downhill, the heater reveals this fact e...

Re: Running rich. How to "lean out?"

...but they still foul plugs. (WTF?!) I'm now fussing with my float levels (they were high) to try to solve the continued fouling problem. Have you converted to civilian ignition ? What make and model of spark plugs do you use ? I have a civilian setup and use NGK BKR6EKC in the Alps betwees sea le...

Re: Float level adjustment?

Thanks pinzinator.
It's looking like I'm going to need a total of three (1mm) spacers to get my level down to specs then. I was worried that it might crush the valve into the floats...

Cheers!

Re: Running rich. How to "lean out?"

Twin Pinzies, what jets did you end up using? I swapped out the stock factory jets (#140,#60) with high elevation jets (#125,#55). The trucks run smoother, idle better, and don't smoke nearly as bad as before but they still foul plugs. (WTF?!) I'm now fussing with my float levels (they were high) t...
