Need Pictues of SAV Flex Kit Exhaust Installed
After having our new to us 1971 Pinz 710M for a couple of months and frequenting this forum, we're learning about what we bought!
Somewhere along the line someone cut out the OEM tail pipe bells and welded two smaller pipes in their place. I see that as a problem because there's no allowance for expansion and it's probably been stressing the headers and cylinder heads. So I probably need to get the SAV flex exhaust like so many of you have.
But I haven't found any pictures of the SAV flex kit installed and would like to see some.
Here's mine, I'm afraid that there isn't enough OEM pipe on the headers to make a flex pipe work. Does that mean new headers ($$$$) or a muffler shop modification to make the SAV kit work?

Re: Need Pictues of SAV Flex Kit Exhaust Installed
looks a bit short on the header side. Not sure what the exhaust clamp is on the upper header since the pipes are welded?
I would suggest getting the kit from SAV or EI and taking it to your local exhaust shop for them to weld it in on the header side to the original headers or the extended pipes.

With my cobbled up situation, either using the SAV kit and cutoff tube stubs from mine with a proper OD stub welded onto them might work.
And Hotzenplotz' method might be a good choice.
My cobbled in straight pipes are 1.5" OD. Unfortunately there's a bell on one end of one of them.

It's just an exhaust clamp - whoever did this just left it and the short piece under it on.Haf-e wrote:looks a bit short on the header side. Not sure what the exhaust clamp is on the upper header since the pipes are welded?

Thanks pcolette. Just what I needed to see.
Looks like my headers are cut too short, but new short pieces to match the SAV kit could be welded on.

But their shortest is 4" and I don't have enough length to offset the flex joints on the Pinz like Hotzenplotz did. Vibrant Performance doesn't give the OD of the flex portion of their joints, my two pipes are 2.5" on center. I'd have to check with them.bbolander wrote:With my cobbled up situation, either using the SAV kit and cutoff tube stubs from mine with a proper OD stub welded onto them might work.

Re: Need Pictues of SAV Flex Kit Exhaust Installed
The stock Pinz is fixed hard piping from the header up to the heat exchanger.
Freedom of movement to prevent stress is via the hangers on the exchanger
and muffler. So what you have and a stock Pinz ain't much different. What
may be an issue is back-pressure if the diameter of the added pipes are
undersized. So you may not really have a problem here other than cosmetic.
If your bent on replacing this with flex the other approach would be to buy
a new flange as the one you have has the pipe necks cut off, then cut the
header clean. Get yourself two 18" pieces of 1.75" dia. of flex muffler pipping
from your local Auto store, cut to length. clamp at both ends -- done. This is
also a common approach used by some of us, less fancy but works just fine.

Re: Need Pictues of SAV Flex Kit Exhaust Installed
Not exactly true. the connection from the headers to the heat exchanger in a stock truck is not solid. there are a couple of pieces that use, what amounts to seal rings in swedged stub pieces, that allow movement between the engine and the heat exchanger. What has most owners changing to flex is when the seal rings fail which allows air into the exhaust system causing backfires and of course exhaust leaks. the SAV style flex coupling has worked very well as a fix for those failures. I have had to change my SAV style flex couplings once as they finally failed but that was after many years of use.
Re: Need Pictues of SAV Flex Kit Exhaust Installed
The pictures I've seen and the drawing on SAV shows the bell joints that allow for expansion, not hard pipe? My understanding from reading this forum was that the exchanger is fixed.rmel wrote:The stock Pinz is fixed hard piping from the header up to the heat exchanger.

But I just looked at my exchanger support. The bracket on the frame or body has a horizontally slotted hole which obviously is designed to let the exchanger slide for expansion! As an engineer with field experience on this type of slotted expansion, it all depends on the bolt. If it's too tight it won't expand. Worth checking into and then you're right, I don't need to do anything!
Thanks for the info on the exchanger support, which I've confirmed by looking. Good solution, I don't need to do anything except check to see that the exchanger support actually allows movement as intended.

That doesn't mean the SAV kits or other flex joints aren't a good idea! Styer-Puch obviously thought they wanted provision for expansion there too.

Re: Need Pictues of SAV Flex Kit Exhaust Installed
the flexpipes i used are 30 cm overall length. I had to cut them to fit in, so they might be long enough to bridge the distance betwwn the heat exchanger flange and the exhaust manifold.
Cheers

Re: Need Pictues of SAV Flex Kit Exhaust Installed
i see, so yours came with the two short pipe lengths on each end, you probably have 4 inch flex joints in that assembly. I haven't seen that anywhere in the USA yet in my searches, only the flex joint itself.Hotzenplotz wrote:the flexpipes i used are 30 cm overall length.
