Essential fuel system troubleshooting tools

Post by pinzinator »

Everyone who owns a Pinzgauer needs to have these 3 tools in his tool box to properly diagnose and troubleshoot fuel system problems. They consist of a fuel pressure gauge 0-5 PSI, a float level gauge, and a carb synchronizer. All three can be for purchased for under $100 if you make the float gauge yourself.

A fuel pressure gauge of this scale can accurately give fuel pressure, rather than one with a larger scale which can be inaccurate at lower pressures. The Zenith carbs need the correct pressure to run right.

The float level gauge can be home made for about $2. Buy the right metric bolt at Ace, cut the head off and drill it out, then attach a vinyl tube. It's too easy! The unit shown is way too expensive if you buy from a vendor, the last I saw it was over $100. I gave $12 10 years ago and thought that was high.

The synchronizer is easy to use and does not stall the engine. You just need to be patient and dial it in. Make sure the float level and fuel pressure are correct first.
