broken heat xchanger outlets - pic added.....

Hi all,

Was cruising through the search options, but not finding what I need. My heat exchanger connections to the muffler have both snapped. Any tips or tricks anyone has used to repair this particular area? I'm considering the cheap flex material used to repair exhaust leaks, but that is usually very temporary. Not crazy about buying a new exchanger either.....

Thanks in advance. I can get pics tonight if anyone is interested.

Dave

Not a lot of meat there to work with :(

Might be time for a replacement and while
your at it a new SS Muffler. Even if the metal
was not rusted and solid, that looks like a
fatigue crack not sure you can weld or braze to
that with confidence :?

Ya, I'm going to pull it all apart and see what the condition is of the surrounding steel. There is definitely not enough to band it in any way now that I look at the photo up close. ://

I am going outside my expertise a bit but I have had one of those exchangers torn apart. Perhaps if you could find a pipe whose OD is close to the old ID, one could weld that to the relatively beefy flange then insert into the old pipe to clamp. Actually you could take the pipe all the way to the front flange. that would ensure no leaks elsewhere for exhaust fumes to enter the cabin ventilation.

Interesting! For future reference were you able to reassemble with no issues?

Nice, thanks for the thoughts and info.

Yes, I took it apart because of significant rust on one side. Although I could not find a good or new exchanger then, I was able to find the half shell that I needed. I cut it apart, cleaned and media blasted it and a friend help to weld the shell back on. The internal fins are cast aluminum around the pipes.

Well that makes it a lot more feasible to repair as a lot more pipe is exposed to work with.
But that's some welding skills I don't have  so I'd be apt to just get a decent replacement.

As an alternative, I think this is still available but not for sure.

I have a set of the pipes from inside a heat exchanger with the flanges welded on and in good condition. The shell had rusted out and the aluminum fins were bad so were removed. I made a temorary bracket to help support the pipes from the original heat exchanger mount above.

I'd be willing to sell it if this would help you out.

Thanks Paul. We will see what happens when I take it off this weekend. I may be in touch......
