In my quest for removing all leaks I removed the flywheel to change the crankshaft oil seal (which was completely dry). When I removed the flywheel, I marked one tooth and a corresponding location in the engine timing gear cover plate. Then I figured that the leak came from the gasket between the block and the timing gears cover plate, so I removed it, and proceeded to wash it, that included washing the mark for the position of the flywheel.
Now I can only guess its original position. Is the flywheel balanced with the crankshaft or can I assume it can take any position?

As far as I know the flywheel is balanced independently from the crankshaft.
I had to take mine off to replace the worn gear ring and did not find any reference in the Austrian Army maintenance manual to mark the position.
