Is the fan nut normal or reverse threaded?

Mine won’t budge either way and I would like to know before I start applying max pressure.

Should be normal threaded. If you look at the fan blades and how it should rotate, it is clockwise rotation when viewed from the front.

Standard right hand thread -- clockwise.

A common issue that some have done is over-tighten, MAX torque is 67 Nm (49.4 ft-lbs).
Some has thought it was a left-hand thread and thus over-tightened.

It is also somewhat awkward to remove this nut without the fan locking tool. If
you don't have that get one or make one. It makes a big different it being able
to get leverage on the fan without putting stess on the fiberglass blades.

Thank you. I do have the tool. I even enlisted the help of a friend and we could not get it to budge. Today we will try an impact gun and/or cheater bar. Just wanted to make sure I was pulling the right direction.

I just loosened mine for the first time, and like yours, it was crazy tight. But using a pneumatic impact wrench with a tight fitting six-point socket I was able to get it loose. Will definitely use a torque wrench for reinstallation.

The first time I removed mine I had to use a little butterfly air wrench as it fit nicely in the space. The nut was a bit rounded when I got the truck. A couple of short blips and it was free and correct since.

I figure the Austrian military kid that last tightened it had a lot more muscle than me.

I think the same Austrian military guy overtightened my fan nut too!!!!.

Finally got it to break free using a cheater.

I put a dab of never-seize on it since then and it isn't and issue now.

Recently I had to take my fan off to get a rat nest out of the air space on top of the cylinders. Fn rats.


The rat chewed up a spot or two on the fan also. Due to the fact this is a balanced piece, I have since replaced my fan. I now have a slightly chewed spare. Not sure if this was an over reaction on my part to replace the fan but I do not ever want a fan to grenade on me. I've read some horror stories about that happening.
