Vacuum hose protection

Post by ChickenPinz »

Noticed a rub spot on the vacuum line that powers the brake booster. The hose rubs on the rubber gasket just below the fan shroud. You'll see a carefully-placed hose clamp added in the photo for protection.

A leak here would be bad for your engine.

Rest easy, that hose is one tough hombre -- under that fabric weave is woven steel.
Unless it's been replaced with a poor substitute.

I do rest easy now that it has protection. :)

Yes, it's a tough hose, but the wear is non-trivial and my bar is the airplane mechanic one -- head off all potential problems long before they could ever become issues. Best to address any disabling wear spots early.

This same hose passes through the underside of the pan, and in my case the grommet (a good thing) has deteriorated back to dinosaur cells, so that spot also got more protection until I get a replacement grommet:

You may want to check the position of the clamps that secure that vacuum hose in place. It's possible that over time they have rotated around their securing bolts and allowed the hose to come to close to the fan shroud.

Excellent advice!

Upon inspection, that is the root issue -- the hose was biased too far forward, not giving the right service loop near the engine.

PS: I like that fancy orange striping for your airbox strap -- is that Chevrolet orange?

I don't recall the paint color. That photo is from 8-10 years ago and a different Pinz than my current one. Knowing me, it was probably just some paint I had around in the shop.
