Fuel pump replacement.

Post by mushmasher »

Found several threads on the subject. But didn’t quite answer my questions.

Mines not working. After taking it apart looks like the top membrane was pretty stiff. The bottom on top but not so much. Couldn't find any holes but hard to tell. Push rod seems to be working fine. I hooked up a electric pump and the engine runs good. But I think I prefer the mechanical pump. And save the electrical pump as a emergency backup.

So I was going to replace those membranes but looks like it’s not much more to just get a whole new unit.

Is the OEM SAV pump and the carter m60175 the same quality?

I've never tried the Carter pump but have used a few of the pumps from SAV and found them to be worth the expense. Possibly a good time to replace your fuel hoses too if you haven't already done so.

I've rebuilt mine with parts from SAV and been quite happy.

Just watch the pricing. Willy sometimes gets special deals, so you might find times when a new pump is cheaper than a rebuild kit.

I replaced my mechanical pump with an electrical. Saves you the cranking at cold start.

I have been using a 24v Facet pump for over 10 years and will never go back to a mechanical one. I found out that a mechanical pump for a 1971 VW bus will work perfectly, get one from airheadparts.com
