Starter and mount

Post by JimmyC »

What are the signs and symptoms of a bad starter mount? I think I have one.

had a problem with my starter. Occasionally it would do nothing when the button was pushed, but if I rocked the engine it would start. Occasionally it would spin but not grab. I tried a new starter, the Ei gear reduction sort. The starter seemed to work, but did not engage the flywheel. Another weird thing was that the bottom starter nut was very close to the starter body, even rubbing it a bit. I am pretty sure my rubber mount is bad and have a new one on order, but was wondering how you diagnose a bad starter mount.

The construction of the mount is two steel plates with a very hard
rubber between. A bad mount will show signs of delamination or
loss of material which could cause the starter to be misaligned or
wiggle under load.

If yours is intact it may be some other problem.

Incidentally, the mounting bolts should be Allen head, otherwise
you can't get a good bit on the bolt to tighten as a hex head will
interfere with the mount. Two of these bolts also provide clamping
for the bell housing to cam housing so do need proper tightening.

You might want to check the condition of the teeth on the ring gear
while your at it.

I toook a look at it this afternoon. The rubber adapter had pulled apart and the starter was forward of where it should be. I tried putting the starter and mount together on the bench and something is not right. I sent pictures to EI. Hope to here from them soon. So far they have been very supportive.

Just heard back from EI. The starter, which I bought years ago, is from a batch that had the flange put on incorrectly. It is an easy fix. Remove two screws, rotate flange, install two screws. EI has given great support.

Pinz is back together and running. New gear reduction starter spins motor faster and starts the engine quicker.

Did run into one small problem that I want to warn others about: the passenger side top fastener for the starter mount goes into a blind hole on a little bracket. Be careful your cap screw does not bottom out in this bracket. Mined did and pushed the bracket apart. I had to braze it bake together and then used washers under the cap screw to keep from bottoming out.
