In short yes, put the correct base gaskets on and it should be fine.

Jim and everyone, thanks for the help. The carbs were really messed up. I have no idea why it ran as well as it did before the rebuild.

Float level was off, linkages bent and out of whack, base gaskets shot, old insulator gasket on top of an even older one on the rear, no spring on the lever on the valve covers, and other stuff. That is why I couldn't get a handle on it, there were mutliple problems. Fix something, no improvement, put it back the way it was.

Re-jetted, set float, fixed linkages, new gaskets, sunched and running like a raped ape. Also, no more black smoke at startup or running down the road.

BTW, just FYI, one turn of a linkage connector to one carb can throw them off. Very sensitive.
