Tail pipe for EI muffler?

Post by Bruce Berger »

I finally installed the EI high clearance muffler that I've had laying around for a couple of years :D . Should have done it sooner and it would have saved me from having to replace the transfer case shift cable as well. :x

I'm interested to find out what solutions other's have come up with for tail pipes on the EI or other non-OEM mufflers that exit out the back. I'd like to keep the exhaust near the stock location but it will require a very tight 180 degree bend to clear the body mount. It looks like the easiest option would be to run it out the back. Pictures would be greatly appreciated.

When it became time for a new muffler on my 710 I took it to a local muffler shop. I had them install a high resistance muffler and tailpipe fittings to the location shown in attached photo. Total cost was $135.00 for muffler, tailpipe, hangers and labor. My 712 was $200 and it ends out the rear of the truck but had to be bent up over the body supports.

What's a high resistance muffler?

$135 sounds like a very reasonable price.

They have done a ton of work for me on my work trucks and back when I was part of the jeep crowd.

They knew exactly what I was looking for when I mentioned the need for a high resistance muffler and that torque was my main concern with the Pinz setup.

I need help here on the High Restance muffler? How can that help torque? The engine makes torque, the restance in the muffler would cause it to have higher temp, yes, by staying in longer. If the engine exhaust leaves easier, it should help it breath better! Explain this restance and how much? If this is true there should be a spec! WHat is it? Thanks Just learning all I can, been doing engines 35+ years, and always opened the exhaust, least back pressure is better? 2 stroke different> Loco

First you are correct with your statements for a, current, water cooled, higher horse powered motor. The pinz runs an old air cooled motor, lower gear ratios, lower top end rpm's and relies on torque for performance not horse power. The pinz is not a speed racer nor a diesel so moving air is not as big a concern with its engine for performance, however generating torque with a small displacement engine is.
If you want to find the difference much is written about the differences between generating torque and generating horsepower. Seems americans get hung up on horse power way too much with little regard to torque as most are looking to see how fast they can go. Todays engineers have been able to get high torque and high horsepower but with completely different designs than the pinz type engines.
I will leave it to you to get as technical as you wish by doing some simple searches on the web.

Well i thought with your comment you had some way of explaining it. I read the MYth on Torque and Back pressure. To get torque you need RPMS, Which will make HP also, lower RPM and lower everytning. Now, How does the BP create or help Torque? It's not on the net. On a Pinz. If you don't adjust the fuel after opening or reducing the BP you could have a problem. To lean or to rich. But if you adjust with muffler mod I can't see any problem. This EFI they all pushing controls the AFR which keeps all in balance with electronics, which is probably better. Do they change the exhaust or do you know? Thanks Loco

Locosmith, EFI doesn't increase anything. Jake post the dino results. He did several test muffler no muffler, Different filters, nothing changed horse power or torque.
