Fuel pump problems

Hello Group,

yesterday while driving my 712 it would not start up again as usual. When disconnecting the fuel line to the carbs, fuel would only squirt out sporadically. Fuel filter was clean and easy to blow through, same as line to the tank. When we disassembled fuel pump it would squirt fuel well when we activated its lever. Not finding a solution in the field we gravity fed the carbs, and, law and behold, the fuel pump began squirting fuel like crazy (it had been reconnected to the tank, but not to the carbs). Reconnected the pump to carbs, all seemed fine at that point and truck behaved nicely. However, next time I killed the motor it did again have problems starting up. Seems that at low RPM the pump is not squirting enough fuel, but, contrary to expectations, the motor idles well and does not die during idling. I am hoping to go in-country on saturday, and would appreciate any suggestions. Am taking an electric fuel pump with me just in case.

The issue is definitely fuel pump related. Anybody know who has rebuild kits for sale? Could not find any on EI or SAV in stock, nor part 7121085442 which is the offending culprit.

Thilo at T-Lo's Ultimate Offroad http://www.mogsrus.com/ may have some kits. He has rebuilt fuel pumps for me and does an excellent job.

Just got my kit, but has anybody ever tried using the old beetle fuel pump as a replacement for the Pizgauer one?

Some of them will work but are clocked wrong.
They are a good inexpensive emergency repair part.
One note on rebuilding the stock pump, it is best to plane both mating halves with 800 grit parer on a machined flat surface.
This will prevent ant unwanted leaks (squirting out the sides)due to warping

Original Steyr-Puch parts are of an exeptional high quality, always keep it real... stay away from seemingly cheap VW replacements, they are not the same quality!
