Anybody ever rebuilt one of these little boogers? They gotta be similar to a fuel injector...maybe?

I took one apart just for grins,and the answer is no! Some have just plugged holes and seem to have ok results. Ck w/ EI,they were talking about a replacement. If their original idea was to prevent dieseling ( an issue in that era),it would seem moot w/a standard trans. I am SURE Jim or Dave WILL correct/clarify my thoughts.

Thanks! Are they for theft prevention or roll-over issues? My 1st thought was to plug them...but I would like to know what they were intended for. Just in case.

Per the repair manual "to prevent engine from running after ignition is switched off".

A well running engine will hardly idle at all if even one of the solenoids fails to open with power; sounds like you must have other leaks within the carburetor.

As Mark said, they are to prevent dieseling when the engine is shutdown...
Without them, and using the clutch to stop the engine just puts stress on components and premature failure.

Also, if there is afterun, without the solenoids to stop the fuel, there will be a little unburnt fuel sucked into the engine that will wash lubricate from the bottom of cylinder walls. May even seep past the rings and into the oil.... not an immediate affect, but over time

By plugging them, I think he removed the solenoids and capped the hole..... not a good thing... ok for 'get me home!" but not long term

I was getting random solenoids(on/off). Found that the blower was hanging-up and popping the breaker...sometimes! It would kill the power to the solenoids without blowing the breaker on occasion. Free'd up the blower and guess what...solenoids work all the time now! I love the "Fix-it" idea far better than the "Replace-it" idea! Thanks for the thoughts ya'll!

It wasn't clicking, no issues with the carb.

I just had a solenoid go bad and had no luck getting one from the usual parts places. I ended up getting one from a Pinz supplier and was pretty surprised with the $175 price tag. Is there reasonably priced source for these things? I'd like to be prepared before the next one goes bad.

They're a very specialized item and only available from SAV and EI as far as I know. At $175 that's about $25 less than the last one I needed in a hurry. They probably were a lot less when they were plentiful.

Just a note about these cutoff's, be very careful not to over tighten them as they tend to buckle at the holes in the threaded area.

I think I like where you're going with this...!

I take the phrase "Sealed for life" as a direct challenge. The solenoid, like most things were assembled. Therfore it can be dis-assembled!

The trick of course is to adopt a slow, forensic type probing as you go. Gently does it. Adjusting the size of felling axe and sledge hammer as you proceed! It DOES work........................sometimes!
