Valve cover torque

Post by totaljoint »

I had to work this weekend, so I let my sons take the 712 out overnight with Northwest Overland Society on a run to Gallaher Head Lake- way back in the Cascades behind Roslyn (where they filmed Northern Exposure).

At the summit of I-90, the rear most valve cover came loose/off.
Apparently when this happens, lots of oil comes out (1.5 qt), smokes volumes and the car behind gets sprayed with 30wt.

A mechanic on the trip put did a trail fix with an 8mm nylon lock nut, and the rest of the run was beautiful, steep and rocky but engine-wise, uneventful.

Now, a nylon lined lock nut can't be a long term replacement with the heat in this area, and since the cover is aluminum, does anyone know the torque
with which to tighten the new nut?

The Drawing is a little confusing to me too, does it have to be the capped nut (Drawing # 01-01-69), does it need a locking washer and stainless nut (Drawing #01-01-14 + 01-01-70), and is this a case for loctite in that location?

There are no current leaks, so I assume the gasket is OK. Any one else had this happen on the trail- I haven't read about this here before.
Thanks,
Ed

Mine leaked this weekend as well. The gaskets are wayyy to narrow. I'm going to make my own gasket out of cork material.

Print this out and tape it to the inside of your tool box or the glove box.
Very helpful to know, especially if you are where someone else has to work on your vehicle.
