Won't start after 3 month sit

Post by berger »

Hey Guys.

Due to other interests this past summer, the Pinz has sat in the garage all summer. I am getting it ready to drive the Vets to my local Cenotaph for Remembrance day, but she just won't fire up. Turns over very well, but won't catch. I am kicking myself for not adding stabilizer while it sat. Before I pull the cover, is there anything obvious to look for or tricks to kick it over? I will eventually check spark and fuel when I get home.

Thx!

Have you tried priming the carbs?

By priming do you mean pumping the pedal prior to starting?

Edit...manually add fuel to bowls. I will give that a shot.

No, I mean pull the intake cover off the carb's and pour a small amount of gas directly into the mouth of each carb. About a quarter ounce in each carb than try to start, you may have to repeat this a time or two to get going. This method is considered safer for the motor than using starting fluid, in the past I remember seeing posts about starting fluid (ether) having caused damage to Pinz motors.

Do be careful some times motors "spit back", if you have fuel spilled on the motor or an open container too close there is a risk of fire, so be prepared. While i dissagree with some of the information in the following link it expressis the reason for caution. http://community.cartalk.com/discussion ... ch-on-fire

Manually filling the float bowls is an option, more effort for the same results, in my opinion.

Thanks Ed. Actually, I figured out what you meant. Ya, I won't be opening up the carb to add fuel to the bowls. :)

have had a lot of success starting pinzies that sit for long periods of time by removing small hose at air intake and adding small about of gas. A bottle with hose helps direct fuel directly into carb without having to remove engine cover. This can be done through the inspection cover, makes things much more convenient.

Well, she is running!!!

Left work a little early to get a few more daylight hours to work, anticipating a lengthy procedure. Yesterday morning I hooked up both my Deltran tenders to each battery and let them trickle until I got home. I had also dumped the appropriate amount of stabilizer designed for ethanol on the 26th, which must have circulated through the fuel system with all the cranking I have done these past few days.

Anyway, I jumped into the truck and she caught on the first turn, but died. Pulled the choke the entire way and she fired right up!!! I am assuming the batteries were a little low, but I never would have guessed when I first tried the truck. It cranked so strongly, but just wouldn't turn over.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys!

Truck is running great! Finally got it back into the bush where it belongs. Did some scouting today before Deer season starts on Monday.
