oil return tube leaking

Post by Justin Case »

My 712 is leaking oil from the oil return tube. I was hoping fora little advice on the procedure to fix it, and what parts need to be purchased for the repair. I have the repair manual just looking for tips.

How bad? To fix this you would have to remove the head. To get a head off you may as well do a complete top side job. All upper gaskets, o-rings, and tube flange gasket. Then you would also want your valves and rings checked. Measure how much you are leaking -- liters1000 miles, if minor hold off. Check your compression as well if good then when you decide to get a topside job done, good chance it would be just seals and not more extensive -- been there :?

The leak has got to the point where you can,t sit in the cab with it idling because of the smoke from the oil hitting the exhaust.

Do you know for sure the leak is the tube and not the tube flange?
And if the tube is the leak at the head end or the block end terminating
into the flange. If it's the flange and not the tube gasket or O-ring, then
you could try taking the air shroud off and see if you can carefully tighten
the flange bolts (2/flange), that would be a lucky situation -- I never get
all that lucky.

The leak looks like it is coming from the back of the head, I will look at it closer in the morning. I am not lucky enough for it to be simple, thanks for the input.
