Trans Fluid Change
Trans Fluid Change
I changed my transmission fluid three years ago with Redline MT-90 75/90, and it now has about 6000 km on it. What is the recommended change interval for the trans with this type of fluid?
Thanks,

Re: Trans Fluid Change
Since gearboxes do not get any combustion by-products in the oil, the oil stays clean and generally runs cooler than engine oils so it is not unusual for most new vehicles to NEVER see any gearbox oil changes. That's not to say that it would be a good idea to change it, but with modern lubricants like the MT90 there is no significant benefit to changing the oil more than perhaps every 50,000 miles (80k km) at the earliest. Of course, if you go submarining then you might need to change it every trip, along with the transfer case, wheel hubs and motor oil!

Thanks for the reply. I want to keep up on lube changes, but with prices going up I don't want to change if there's still life i the old fluids.

As the man says if you haven't been in deep water it may not be an issue, especially if you have been the one doing the service.
Periodically I take out the top fill plug and check the condition of the fluid. If there is no foam or discoloration of the stuff, I leave it alone. It is going to take me a long time to go 50K miles.

Re: Trans Fluid Change
I have had Redline MT in my transmission for 8 years and 20K km with no leaks or problems, and probably won't change it for a few more years. I would recommend this oil to everyone.

Would condensation and collected water be a concern in humid areas?

No the heat that a 10 minute trip generates burns off any water. This brings up the point about the good it does to drive an often parked vehicle and letting it get up to operating temp every once and while.

Re: Trans Fluid Change
Looking to change my transfer case and transmission. Sounds like several here recommend Red Line MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil. Any other suggested products?
