Clutch

Post by ziegler »

I started the truck up last night and went to put it in reverse but couldn't get it into gear. This happened 10 years ago, I guess there's rust between the clutch plates. I can't remember how I resolved the problem. I believe I removed the access panel in the front of the bed of the truck and sprayed WD 40 on the clutch. Any info is appreciated. Mark

I'd be hesitant to go spraying WD-40 into my clutch zone.

Sounds like the right answer is to pull the transmission and inspect/replace the clutch and related parts. It's pretty easy and you can do the whole job from inside the truck in a couple hours.

If you start with it in gear but the clutch disengaged (say 1st or second), how strong is the tendency to creep ahead?

If the clutch plate is "bonded" to either the pressure plate of flywheel
obviously it's going to grind going into gear -- I assume that's what you
experienced. Perhaps put it in 1'st with the engine off then start in
gear with the clutch open and *maybe* it will break free. Let your
motor be the muscle :D

I jacked the rear end of the truck off the ground and put it in 3rd gear and depressed clutch, got the wheels spinning and hit the break hard with clutch still depressed and it worked. Hope this helps someone else. Zig

Hmm. I'd put it on your list to pull the clutch sometime when it's convenient. Maybe you have some water damage inside? Been doing any water crossings?
