Wheel bolt pattern

Post by dadnova »

According to the post I have found, the wheel bolt pattern is 5X160mm But when I measure my bolt pattern from center of stud 1 to stud 3 it seam to measure 155mm, not 160. What am I doing wrong?

It's really a bolt hole circle, the circle that all bolts fall on.

With an even number of bolts a center of bolt to center of opposite
bolt measures that BHC directly.

With an odd number, 5, you have to measure from center of one bolt
to a guess where the opposite side of the circle falls, or you have to
dig out your old Trig book when you take the measurement from one
bolt to the the 3'rd bolt from it as that measurement will be short. So
155'ish sounds about right for a BHC of 160mm.

I've seen websites say measuring from hole 1 to hole 3 works - but I think it just gets a close approximation and not the actual value. As mentioned, the trig math just doesn't match.

I've had spacers made up with the 5x160 bolt circle value and the fit perfectly. The Ford transit van rims say 5x160 on them and they fit perfectly as well.

The trig is not that hard, any smart phone calculator in scientific mode can solve this.

BHD = D/Cos(90/B); where
D = distance from semi-opposite bolts, e.g. for 5 bolt pattern, Bolt 1 to Bolt 3 (longest path)
B = number of bolt holes e.g. 5
Cosine fuction is in degrees not radians.
