Leaking Hub

Post by SAM. C. »

Hi All I have a leaky front hub on close inspection it looks like it is leaking from the joining face of the castings rather than from the hub sal. Is this common and do you think I may be able to get away with dissassembling cleaning ad reassembling using some aviation sealant?

Thanks in advance

Sam,
I don't understand your description of the location of the leak. But I'm not aware of any potential leak spot that can be fixed with sealant. Seals and o-rings are what keep the gear lube in it's place. I suspect one or more have failed.
Got a picture of the area you're looking at?

Here are some images. The hub on the inside is dry you can see the seal weeping on the inside of the shield. Outside the area around the hub is dry the oil seems to be coming from the bolt that goes through to the inside. What do you reckon?

Sam,

Thanks for the pics, though I still had trouble orienting. Here's my guess.

I assume it's gear lube, and not brake fluid - a quick sniff will determine this. It looks to me like the fluid is on the inboard side (towards center of vehicle) of the wheel-drive. There is a small weep-hole through the cast backing plate, which allows any lube that gets past the wheel-drive unit seal/s to escape without ruining your brake shoes. So the lube is leaking behind your brake, then exiting towards the center of the vehicle through the weep-hole. ??

Thanks for the input. It is gear oil for certain I think the gasket (or seal) on the onboard side is shot. This is allowing oil to leak along the bolt hole to the inside of the drum. That is why there is a lot more fluid and it is higher up on the inboard side. I am hoping it is not the hub seal as I don’t have all of the fancy bits in the expedition imports video to do the job. I have 3 half axles to reinstall and then I will have a look at it.

Thanks for your help.

Sam,

Don't let the job put you off. IIRC, the only touchy part is pulling a gear, and for that you need a particular sort of puller. But you don't need the Pinz tool.

I bought a puller at Harbor Trash https://www.harborfreight.com/gear-pull ... 62958.html , slightly ground down the arms, and it works fine. The puller arms fit under an internal lip on the face of the gear. The little tab on the puller arms that fits under the lip just needs to be made small enough to fit under the lip. Even if you accidentally bust off a little lip, the gear can still be used (apparently without negative consequences, as I've pulled gears out with missing parts).

Only thing I can remember that'll give you concern is that there are two sizes of spacer and seal used, and you can't tell which you've got without measuring. See #'s 16 & 17 here: http://www.pinzgauer.com/parts.php?cat= ... view=04-10 Either disassemble, measure and then order, or else order both sets and toss what you don't need. R&R # 15 too.

The repair is in the manuals. Just read 'em carefully and take your time. It's not a tough fix.

What parts do I need for the job? I am going to buy 2 spacers and I know I will need 2 o-rings. Is there anything else? I seem to remember another plastic ring in the images.

Sam,
Sorry, it's been a while for me.
I'd guess 15, 16 and 17 to begin with. I'd inspect the bearings too, as long as you're in there. I also recall some upgraded version of the lock plate shown as 22 & 23.
I suggest a search for the specifics of replacing the seals, etc., as I recall this being covered by others before. You may also wish to contact SAV for advice on it too, as Willy's very knowledgeable even if somewhat less-than-talkative.

Hi Sam,
It does look a bit like it's leaking from the joint where the inner/outer hub casings bolt together. Or could be leaking from the small tell-tale hole. Either way, i'd replace the hub seal while it is apart.
You don't need any special tools, but you will need a puller to get the gear off. Most off the shelf pullers I know of that could do it without modifying are quite expensive. As mentioned, you could buy a more budget one and grind the arms to suit.
There are 2 seal sizes, so I wouldn't buy anything till you get it apart and check which size you have. The seals can be bought locally very easily. You then only need gasket sealant and loctite (for the 3 bolts holding the gear on)
Make sure the mating surfaces of the casings are very clean and flat before re-assembly
