Pinz Fluid summary

Been looking at the threads for fluids for the pinz and wanted to summarize what I found and see if anyone has any updates/changes/revisions or alternatives to them. Included are the capacities (for buying online purposes), and also what I think they mean in the parenthesis
This is for a 710K pinz operating in northern california coastal area, so mild winters and warm summers

Engine oil: For changing 6.5 L, Valvoline VR1 20W-50 racing oil.
Oil Filter: Mann W940/5 or W940/18

Change speed gearbox (transmission): 2 L (2.3L for auxiliary drive but not sure what this is) Redline GL-4 MT-90 75W-90

Reduction gearbox (transfer case): 2.3 L - Redline heavy shockproof

Axle drive (differential): 2 L each (total 4L), Redline heavy shockproof

Wheel drive rear (Rear portal): 0.35 L each (total 0.7L) - NAPA GL-1 90wt gear oil vs Lucas 80W90 vs swepco 201 90 wt

Wheel drive front (front portal): 0.4 L each (total 0.8L) - NAPA GL-1 90wt gear oil vs Lucas 80W90 vs swepco 201 90 wt

- Castrol 20W50 High-Mileage (6qt with filter change to 2/3 of low->full mark)
- Mann Filter W940/29 (no hex hut, $12.93 Amazon) or W940/5 (hex hut, $14.50 SAV1008M)

The only thing I would add is that Lucas Gear Oil is good to add to all those areas. It does reduce/stop leaks and help reduce noise levels noticably.

I am very suspicious on gear oil specification "GL-5" as this type of oil is very corrosive, I have filled in throuug all of the gears GL-4.

In the Austrian and also in the Swiss Drivers Manual it does not specify GL-4 or GL-5.

In the Austrian Manual it says "Gear Oil Pz-90" (whatever "Pz" may mean), in the Swiss Drivers Manual it says does not evan give any viscosity but only "Universal Gear Oil".
On both Manuals this gear oil is used for all gears, including steering, differentials and end drives.

So if you have filled in a gear oil with the specification "GL-5", check the Colour of that oil after some time - if the Colour has changed, you better use another oil as there is already a chemical reaction.

Many modern GL5 oils, especially synthetics, are made so they don't affect the brass in GL4 spec'ed trans. Redline GL5 is one such oil that is safe for all gear systems.

I have used Redline Heavy Shockproof in my transfer case and Redline MT-90 in my transmission for many years with no problems, it appears to work better than gear oil.

I know people get almost religious about some of these gear oil specs and advocate the fancy lubes, but has anyone *actually encountered* any failures in the drivetrain components that could be attributed to failure of the lubricant to do its job? I'm not talking about lab tests -- I'm asking about real world experiences in a Pinz. My suspicion is that the standard (non-fancy lubes) meet all the needs and there aren't any observed failures that might have been avoided if one used the fancy lubes.

I just found some pages of a maintenance booklet from Steyr-Puch for the 710M and 710K - it says therein for all gears, including steering gear: Mil-L-2105;
It says MIL-L-2105 - without any additional letter like A, B or D. Thats why I use GL-4. I know that there are oils, covering GL4 and GL5, but I have no experience with such oils.

I just drained and refilled the transmission. Was Valvoline 80W90, refilled with Redline MT-90. Refill took 1.8qt. Sounds like there's an undrainable portion in the transmission if it's spec'd for 2L (2.11qt).

So I took out the GL-5 option from the portals.
From what I have read, definitely do not use any synthetics for the portal, in the event of leaks it can damage brakes.

I did see the spec page for the mil-l-2105 but seems the only oil that has that spec is from liqui-moly, and it's not easy to buy where I live. but I suppose you can use the 85W-90 liqui-moly as they have that spec listed. I think 85W-90 is close enough to 80 w, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I've been very pleased with the CRC Sta-Lube product that rmel mentioned. I've used it for 10+ years for portals and diffs. Their part number is SL24239 and it's available on Amazon for $28.75/gal. shipped, if you can't find it locally.

And with my last oil change, where the engine was fully warmed and allowed to drain (siphon and drain plug) for 30+ minutes and a new 940/5 filter installed, it was 7.5 quarts to fill to the top dipstick mark.

As a side note, even after >20 minutes, I noticed this constant drip from the drain plug: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vMYhH- ... sp=sharing, about 13 drips in 10 seconds.

Doing a viscosity test, the viscosity of this late drip was the same as the initially drained oil.
