Wheel drive leak solved? (bad fill plug)

Post by ChickenPinz »

I've been chasing a slow leak from the LF wheel drive coming from the fill plug. I'd tried replacing the copper washers, annealing the washers, cleaning everything, giving it a bit extra torque, but the slow leak persisted from the plug area. The casting surface looks pristine.

Then I put the plug under a microscope, and it appears it may have been mis-machined. Talking to a machinist friend of mine, he suggests it was from someone pulling off the cutter too early, and that would leave this spiral cut.

A new plug has been installed (with red paint), and I'm awaiting test results.

Anyone else seen leaks from a fill plug before?
