Clutch Slipping

Post by hrafn »

On my way home from the Gun Club today, my clutch suddenly started
slipping bad. Fortunately I was almost home. There was no warning or
prior symptoms. What should I be look for before doing a clutch teardown?

Thanks

Either on the rivets, or disk fragmenting.
Remove the inspection cover on the bell housing. It will be obvious if the disk fragmented, looks like dirty fiberous material.

Thanks Jim :D

Looks like a tear down is coming my way. When I pulled the
inspection cover I found a lot of greasy dust and some very
fine metallic particles.

When you get the tranny out and do an inspection, be sure to carefully check the pressure plate for broken springs and/or worn fingers. It could be that your clutch disk is finally thin enough and the pressure plate springs weak enough that the clutch is finally slipping. If so you would need to replace te pressure plate, too. In fact when I had my motor rebuilt we decided that the clutch disk looked good but the pressure place seemed well worn, so we replaced it and not the disk.

Got it apart and only found that the disk was pretty thin, almost down to the
rivets. Fortunately the flywheel is not scored, but I'm going to get it
resurfaced anyway.

While I have it apart I thought I might as well replace the rear main seal.
Any hints on removing the old seal and installing the new seal?

Thanks gents - this forum is great. :D

Is okay to re-use the flywheel bolts? The manual seems to indicate
otherwise, but they are pretty expensive.

Clean them, use blue loctite and they torque to 250 ft lbs.
