Hand tight should be right. The screws shouldn't deform
the metal plate that holds the seal in place.
By the way you don't need to cut the seal to mount it correctly without pressing the wheel drive off.
It is fairly easy, you just need to screw the seal off.
Unbolt the steering link. Then dismount the 8 bolts that hold
the 2 steering pins in place.
And voila you can take the portal housing off and change
the seal without damaging it.
It is really just one or two hours of work and there is no need
to press off the axle as described in the workshop manual.
It should look like this in the middle of the process.
Myself I wouldn't cut the seal because I do a lot of deep water
crossings and drive through a lot of mud.
For those Pinzgauers that don't see mud or water regularly a
split seal is absolutely in order.

seal ring split style
I bought the following part (part # 7101422991) from SAV. As you can see it is described as "seal ring split style" The rings I rcvd are solid not split. I called to see if a mistake had been made and they told me that the "split style" came unsplit and you had to make the cut yourself. They said presplit were not made. (very confusing to me why they are called split style then) Does anyone know if there is a source for presplit?. I would be concerned about making a clean glueable cut
aaargh! jumped the gun!! the nos ones have a spring around the circumference and are "unsplitable" These don't have the spring embedded and can be split.
