710 vs. 712 transmission

Post by karoja »

Why is the maximum shifting speed for each gear different for both models? Is the transmission different?

No, it is in the transfer case gearing, and before you ask, no the gears can't be swapped. But you can put a 710 transfer case in a 712. Off side is you loose some of the low rpm torque due to gearing, but you gain top speed to 65-70mph. Just remember though, the faster you go, the faster all the reduction gears are spinning increasing wear and shortening useful part life.
That said, the swap works best with lighter trucks(soft tops)

Thanks Jim, something new learned  ! No, I will not do a swap. Just been driving a 710 lately and am surprised how nimble and fast it is compared to the 712 ambulance. The ambulance, however, behaved beutifully suspension-wise during our jugle tour. What a smooth ride compared to the 710!

Jim, can you alternatively to the inverse swap, 712 into 710? I do not mind my 712 AMB loosing torque, but could see the advantage of having more torque in my 710 M to use as a rock crawler. Just thinking...
Thanks in advance,
Karl

Yes, it will work in a 710, but top speed will be reduced.
