Differential ?

Post by Gear »

Does the Pinzgauer Differential have just a fill and drain plug. Or is it similar to the Transmission that has the 3 plugs(fill, level, and drain). I have looked in several spots for this simple answer but am still coming up empty.

Thanks

The front and rear diffs have three plugs: a drain plug on the bottom, and a filler plug and control plug on the right side. The top plug is where gear oil is added until it begins to run out the lower control plug.

Thanks Landy,
I will get out there tomorrow and try and locate the fill plug.

Differentials - Simple drain and fill. Took some photographs because I am a visual learner.

Image
Supplies used. AutoZone for the Coastal Oil. Used a little Anti Seize on the treads of the plugs. Boxed end wrench is used as a cheater bar for the allen wrench. Hammer to tap the plug before loosening. 5 gallon bucket for the used oil.

Image
Front Differential - Gear oil is being pushed up into the top fill plug. You can see the new oil coming out of the Control Plug. The bottom of the differential has the drain plug.

Image
The Rear Differential - Upper left corner is the Fill Plug. New oil is draining out of the Control Plug. Just above the bucket is the Drain Plug.

Were we supposed to anneal the copper washers with a propane torch before re-installing them (to soften them up)?
(a quick acid bath after annealing made mine shiny like new, got rid of the burned tar/oil residue.)

I bought some at Napa and rotate them. The one I take off I put in the bottom of the oven and when baking or some other oven related activity is going on it anneals. They are then ready for the next use.
