Split boot replacement - looking for the dos and don't

Diffs, axles, lockers, transmissions, portals, that kind of thing.

Spotted Cow from New Glarus Brewery works best for me. In a pinch Fat Squirrel or Totally Naked will suffice. And yeah those really are the names! :lol:

As far as I can tell, every posting on this forum starts over here and ends up waaaay over here!

It sounds like the boot replacement is an easy enough job. Clean the surfaces, use the proper glue, clamp securely, place the split in the proper position etc etc etc

Unless someone is a glutton for punishment, it sounds like the split boot is the way to go without exception. It actually never occured to me to go with the original item. My previous 710 had several of them and I bought it from Thilo. He's such a freak about precision and mechanical integrity that if they didn't work well, there's no way that my 710 would have had them!

Mission accomplished!

The biggest challenge to this job was getting situated under the Pinz in such a way that I would be comfortable and stay fairly clean. Once I had a big old mat, a number of towels and the right tools (straight blade screw drivers, carpet knife and a couple of rags, the job when without a hitch. I also used some silicon sealant for the split boot gap. I probably shouldn't admit it but I also smeared some of this sealant along the perimeter of the two big hose clamps...for extra protection. Without getting into a hurry, this one probably took 45 minutes. The next one will take half the time.

I forget one step in the process that both Morris and Paul strongly encouraged and that was the beer and sandwich requirements. I completed spaced!!! Hopefully this installation won't come undone because of the beer omission.

Thanks again for the guidance on what is assuredly an easy project that all of us will need to contend with at some point or another in Pinzgauer ownership.

Hey Guys.

I am going to dive into this soon, but I haven't read anything on how to remove the old, stock boot. Is it inserted inside the axle...does it get cut off?

Just remove the inner and outer clamps and cut the rest off with a razor knife.

Guys, does the side being worked on need to be jacked up off the ground, or can you install the boot with the truck on a flat surface...like my garage?

It's easier flat. If it's jacked off the ground, the boot will need to be flexed a lot. It goes on easiest without being flexed.

Remember to keep the seam to the right on all axles, just like the instructions show.
