Split Boot Installation

Post by jrcotner »

I'm getting ready to install split boots on my Pinz and have read in a former post that super glue is good to seal the boots. Is this the best solution or is there another adhesive that is better? I've read many former posts on the merits of solid boots over split boots. But since I use the Pinz as a weekend grocery getter and round town putter, I think I can get away with the split boots for now.

Thanks,
Thanks,

Use Locktite 414. It's a superglue formulated especially for vinyl, rubber and plastics. Not really a sealant but it bonds the 2 edges of the boot into one. It's very fast so watch your fingers.
All 4 of mine were done with it and are still going strong after 4+ years.

The little tube of 414 that I bought from EI is supposed to do 4 boots, if memory serves. I used some small, sprung hand clamps to help hold the boot together while drying.

I just use superglue. I also glue it before stretching it over the axle seats and before installing the hardware.

Thanks for any tips - I noticed a single cut in one of mine that I'll probably replace this week.

The hole is about as big as my finger and has been there a while, as it was hard to see, and can't see inside, being on the top side, oddly enough.

Until a split boot arrives, should I shoot a little grease inside or just leave it alone?

If it’s a simple cut you may be able to super glue it till the new boot arrives.

You guys are very skilled with superglue. The only thing I can get it to stick to is my fingers!!
