Big bang, now metal "rattling" sound...yikes!

Diffs, axles, lockers, transmissions, portals, that kind of thing.

Berger, once that case is open, good luck keeping it all together! I was surprised at how everything comes apart with no need for coaxing. Make sure you have a floor jack under the diff and jack it up a bit to free up the aluminum ring. Keep in mind, the whole assembly wants to roll around if you still have the drums resting on the floor. I had placed jack stands under the axle housings to keep this from happening.

New split boot from Scott at E.I. installed. Man, that was easy. I'm sure it's partly because the front end is out, but the quality boots sure do go on without a hitch.

HEY! You've got that boot oriented wrong. Check the instructions that came with the boot.

The seam belongs to the right, as you stand looking at the differential, on both sides. If you look closely at the diff., you'll notice that the axles do not line up. One is ahead/behind the other. The seam should be at the point of least flex: ie. right as you face it.

Thanks for the heads up. Somehow my boot arrived without instructions, so it was a bit of guesswork. So the boot needs to rotate right as was the orientation of the old one (90 degrees)...makes sense..... will adjust tonight!

Good catch Paul!
pcollete wrote: Instructions from SAV (with some minor editing from me):
- Remove old boot and clean area.
- Do not grease boot or axle parts.
- Put the split boot on the axle.
- Coat the split area with Loctite #414 and press together. Hold until dry (approx 30-60 seconds depending on how much you put on).
- Slide the split boot towards the differential housing as far as it goes.
- Rotate the boot until the split points to the front on the right side (passenger) and to the rear on the left side (driver).
- Install the new clamps. The tightening bolts should be on the opposite side from the split.

Ok, so the boot has been reoriented, case has been reassembled, witches hat installed and and steering/speedo drive reattached to front end.

Of course, after filling with gear oil, I have developed a small "weeping" leak at the passenger O-ring, probably from dislodging it and resetting it. No point in fixing it until the diff is back in the truck, as I will have to remove the axle drive.

Hopefully the full reinstallation will be taking place on Friday, after I do some prep work (shocks, etc).

O ring leak is now fixed. Just took it apart again and cleans all surfaces really well. Reassembled and we are in business!

Boot orientation is best at 10:00 or 2:00 o clock position.
