Crunchy into 3rd

Post by Buzz »

I have noticed a problem pulling into 3rd gear. I get the crunch nearly every time but it seems to go away once I have run on the highway and everything is warmed up.
I should mention that last summer I had to disassemble the clutch to reattach the throw-out bearing to the fork. The push rod had actually broken and left the ball end in the fork.
So, suggestions? Is the throw out bearing on the loose again or is there something else to check?
Thanks for your time. - Buzz

Yes, the synchro is strong probability. Is it totally unbelievably incredibly impossible to do myself?
On only just terrible?

No offense, but unless you are highly skilled and have the proper pullers, splitters and a press, it would not be easy or fun.
On the upside, all the internal parts are available and most of the gaskets.

No offense taken. I looked in the manual. I would need a boat load of new tools ( not all bad) and new skills. Double clutching is working for now, but at some point I will need to get th hing rebuilt. Thanks for your response. No one likes bad news but good information is a big help.

By no means a solution, but I've actually had this issue mostly disappear by using MT90 Redline. It might help till it can be repaired fully.

Well, I finally got the time and materials to try the MT 90 that Vince suggested. It definitely helped. Shifting into 3rd is better, not perfect, but better. And shifting overal is certainly improved. I wish I had tried it years ago. Thanks Vince!

Nice to hear! The question is, if you had done it years ago, would you have the same problem now? What Amsoil and Redline have done over the last 15 years is pretty impressive and they keep pushing it. It's amazing that you can test a trans. for heat before and after and always see a reduction in operating temps simply by changing the oil to this stuff.

I have to wonder if all the emerging nano-tech research will lead to even more advanced oils that could, in theory, keep a motor/trans. wear-free almost forever? I saw a demo recently of a piece of nano-armor that had been made directly from the nano fiber research that's being done. It looked like a piece of 1/2-3/4 plywood but weighed less than wood. It stopped a .223 round point blank.

Oddly enough, I just ran across this Tribology article: http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2 ... rgy-system
