Now I'm experienced in removing gears from a Diff......

Diffs, axles, lockers, transmissions, portals, that kind of thing.

Now I'm experienced in removing gears from a Diff......

Post by stiffler4444 »

Ok, so I've got the front diff out and definately have a diff bolt broken off in the spider gears (as I call them). Now, to get these babies out, do I need to do anything other than drive a large punch into the hole, knocking out the gear with the broken thread in it? Are the two "sleeves" that the bolt seats in screwed in or are they pressed in?

As per the pics, you can see the broken threaded end in the gear. I was planning on driving the punch through the other side with a hand sledge.

Please stop me if there is another proper method.....(I've searched some topics, but nothing specific to help me).

I will be looking at my repair manual tonight, just wondered if anyone has done this that can chime in.

tx Dave

Dave, it's been quite a while since I've had the diffs out. I seem to recall that the stub axles had to come out first. Do you have a repair manual? I'm pretty sure it's all in there clearly. But at any rate, once you've got the ring gears out of the way you may find enough clearance to disaggregate the center shaft in place.

I've never had the failure that you've got.

So, looks like Diff bolt, which the cheese head bolt fits into is press fit. So I guess a sledge and punch will be my best bet unless I can get my hands on a gear puller/slide hammer type device.

Use a puller and a press or risk very expensive damage to the shaft.
This is not a job for a hammer and punch

Ok, so gears are out, everything looks good. Will be bringing the diff bolt to the shop today to have the broken bolt removed. Now just waiting on parts......
