710 transmission noise?

Post by Yannick »

Hi Guys I'm new here and to the Pinz in general. I just picked up a 74 710m and am in the process of trying to get her back in shape.
Anyhow when getting into 4th gear seems like its making a bit of noise...a howl maybe.. and gets worse in 5th. If i put it in neutral goes quiet. sounds to me like like a bearing going bad but which one?? Not sure how much noise is normal out of a Pinz? After a 10 mile drive @ 50-60 mph got out and felt the trans and tcase and was pretty damn hot ( can hold no more than 5 sec)
I have a lot to learn with this thing and any help is appreciated! Also I'm in Los Angeles and would love to meet anyone with one near me.
-Thanks

Hello, and welcome. Yes the drivetrain is quite noisy and something that you will get used to. 5th gear *should* be the least noisiest (of the tranny noise) as there is a straight 1:1 throuput when in 5th. I would check your tranny oil level to start with.

Welcome to the forum.

Got fluid in them gearboxes? Noisy can be normal. Hot seems odd.

If possible, find another truck to compare noises. Lots of Pinzes in CA, or so I'm told...

Your lucky
1. Check fluid
2. Buy beer
3. Drive an hour to Jim LaGuardia and have him check your entire truck out!

And I assume you already know Scott over at EI?

Hi Yannick. I'm In Culver City and would be happy to compare noises. Just remember, a Pinzgauer is only quiet when it's broken or parked.

Here are some pics of it from when I first got it 10/14/13, drove to Austin, TX. to get it. It was a hunting rig with 6 dog kennels, high seats and gun racks.

GL4 90wt in trans correct/ It needs GL4. As has been mentioned Jim L. / GoatWerks is the guy to see for a full checkup. Too bad you just missed Calico Mog Fest 2013.
Nice to hear that another Pinz has taken over terrorizing the Bay area. I spent years getting strange looks around the South Bay when i lived in P.V.E.

did i mention the GL4

You only need GL-4 for the tranny. Everything else can use GL-5

85/140 is fine
