I found one of the boots where the differential housing and axle housing come together incorrectly installed. There was water and dirt/mud inside the boot. I removed the boot and cleaned itandcleaned the area it protects, but did pull off the retaining ring and seals underneath to lean there.
I am wondering what. Normal practice is for cleaning when a boot fails - just cleaning what you can get to like I did or further digging in.

Re: Dirt in differential boot
Put a new one on, have a beer, and relax. I'm more concerned about finding fluid within the boot, then dust and dirt.
another tip - buy new boots from major vendors. The ebay versions are very poor quality.

Re: Dirt in differential boot
I cleaned everything I could get to without pulling the actual seal. So far no problems.
