I installed a SAV1430 and I’m getting the phantom indicator on the dash. The instructions indicate this is possible with older wiring or hi/low beam relay. I didn’t have the headlights on.
Also, there was a bit of smoke coming from the turn signal switch. The switch had no troubles before (other than not always holding the lever when I let it go).
When installing, I used a ground that works for my compressor switch.
Do I need the SAV1432 or is there something I’m missing?

Re: Now the flasher
I got the SAV1432, but when I read the directions, it referred to wires and terminals that didn’t match the flasher(SAV1430). I called and felt embarrassed because I hadn’t read the directions carefully. It was meant to be put on the headlight relay. When I explained that the phantom indicator flashes happened without headlights, I was told that the turn signal switch was worn out or needed to be cleaned as a small amount of current was passing through.
I thought about just buying a new one but was informed that the turn signal switch worked only with the converted tail lights.
Unfortunately, mine is all original. I was told to try to clean the switch. So, I hosed it with brake cleaner (didn’t have contact cleaner) and blew it out with the air compressor.
The new flasher works, but when I turn on the headlights or high beams, there were a couple of phantom flashes. So, I put the SAV1432 on the headlight relay and no more phantom indicator light.
Some time ago, someone said the VW type II turn signal switch was a good match. Has anyone tried this? Does it work with the original tail lights?
