Starter won't Start

As the subject line says, my 710K starter isn't working. When I pressed the start button, it was just a "click"
So I took it off the truck to bench test.
The solenoid kicks the gear out, but starter motor doesn't spin.

Is there anything I can do to determine if it's something that can be fixed vs. totally dead
and needing replacement? I would imagine a motor shop might be able to repair/overhaul?

Thanks for any pointers...

I've had Pinz starters (Bosch) rebuilt or serviced at your typical alternator/starter repair shop. They are not any different than most Bosch starters so relatively easy to find someone to work on them. The issue is that most parts for them seem to have become quite expensive.

I suggest considering getting the gear reduction starter offered by EI. A bit pricey but well worth it in my opinion. Very well made. https://expedition-imports.com/PZGRST

You could try putting a meter on the Motor terminal, then when the Solenoid
is powered you should see 24V at the motor terminal. If you don't then most
likely the contacts inside the solenoid for the motor are bad or corroded. You
could also apply power directly to the motor terminal, if the motor spins it's
another indication of a funky solenoid. And, if the motor does not respond
with 24V directly to it, your brushes may be gone.

I believe you can get a solenoid as a separate item over the shelf -- 24V Bosch starter parts.

And yes, any decent Alt/Starter re-builder in your area can rebuild these Bosch starters.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I put a meter on the +motor lug
and applied power to the solenoid relay screw. Gear gets thrown out,
but no voltage on motor terminal. Gonna take it in to an alternator shop
tomorrow. Free estimate.

New Solenoid is about $100. EI and Sav

So it appears confirmed bad solenoid. I put voltage direct to starter and she spins up fine.

Hey good news. So after playing and fiddling with the solenoid, including giving it a few whacks with a hammer, it is now working! Power applied in normal fashion and gear kicks out and spins up.

Will re-install in truck tomorrow and hope the lucky mojo sticks around.

Sounds like a poor contact, I don't know if the Solenoid can be
disassembled, but if it can I'd run some fine grit emery paper
between those contacts and squint some dielectric grease on them.
Either that or always park your Pinz going down a steep grade
