Alternator Light come on at higher engine rpm's

Post by SolarImages »

Run down of what i have done.

1. replaced batteries about 12 months ago (cleaned all connections)
2. replaced regulator 18 months ago (cleaned molnex connector on back off alternator)
3. cleaned anything else i can find and added electrical connector grease.

Problem i have now is running down the road at around 45 mph the alternator light come on at a glow, more so if i turn on the headlamps. Now this only happens above 45 mph.. so i am thinking brush? or maybe another connection i have missed or maybe i need to reopen the molnex connector and check it again? thanks for the help.

Try worn brush or broken/frayed wire at back of alternator or Molex connector.

I have seen alternators (not Pinz alternators) where the slip rings were not concentric with the shaft; the brushes would follow the ring at lower rpms, but bounced so much at higher revs that it would not charge and the alternator light would come on then.

This might be the case with your alternator, but the bad news is that it really requires a new rotor (meaning replacement alternator) unless you can have the rings turned true. Hopefully you'll find something else that is the cause.

Yes, you move the shims like a VW.
