civilian ignition conversion gremlins on 710K

Post by bonefish635 »

I'm converting to civilian ignition with the Expedition Imports kit. I have a mechanic doing it for me since there is other work being done by him on it at the same time.

First time it was all installed it ran smoothly for 30mins then died. Ignitor gone.

Scott at EI arranged for a fresh ignitor to be express shipped. Installed and ran fine for an hour. Next day, turned the key and nothing. Ignitor gone again.

Any ideas?

Check the voltage at the + terminal of the coil; if it is much more than 17-18 volts then the ballast resistor may be shorted (or possibly the ignition switch has been mis-wired). IIRC the Pertronix won't take more voltage than the low 20's; without the ballast resistor the voltage could be 28 and this is likely to kill the Pertronix.
